Protein Shakes during first trimester???

ORIGINAL POST

Can anyone tell me if myoplex (lite) can continue to be used during pregnancy? If not, are there any other protein shakes that are safe?

Also, I take a multivitamin called Preventamins - but its without iron. I eat all kinds of meat/fish/seafood/chicken etc. Will I still have to supplement iron when I'm pregnant (again)?

And I used to drink one teabag of raspberry leaf tea combined with one bag of green tea every morning when I was pregnant. Then I miscarried. Dyu think maybe this had something to do with it? I read that raspberry leaf tea was very safe. But I wont be doing that again next time around.

Thanks much for responses!

As a continuance... myoplex lite uses Splenda. Although the FDA says its safe, I'm thinking I'd best stop that too.

If i have any questions like that i take it to my Dr. I've also taken the vitamin packaging in to show her so she is making an informed descion. Hope this helps.

Thanks Ueberempfindlich, yes, I did a fair amount of research, and many herbalists say that it infact prevents miscarriage, but there were a good few that said it caused them if taken in the first trimester. So I guess this is my lesson.

Thanks Perthites... I've already talked to her :D

Cheers!

Mummy's post echos a lot of good research; miscarriages are rarely about what you, the mom, does (barring, I'd say, really bad drugs, etc., and even then sometimes babe is fine), it's more to do with other factors.

Ueber- I've read conflicting things about Raspberry Leaf tea....some say to only drink it closer to your due date to help get labor going. But, others say the tea is good for easing morning sickness, etc., too. Obviously, people have had different experiences with it...i.e. some people here have gone past their due date, etc. So who knows. But here's a website on some of the teas claims to fame...www.pregnancy.com.au/raspberry_leaf.htm

Thanks very much Mummy, its difficult to know whats causing this, because I am quite fit and healthy and appear to be able to get pregnant, so I expect to be able to carry to term, and am now feeling quite annoyed and anxious about the whole thing!!! LOL.

In this case, it all happened even before anything could happen! I did a blood test about 9 days after ovulation, it was positive, but the HCG was low (11). the doctor was expecting higher and said to wait and see. I started feeling less tired and crampy soon after testing, and I started bleeding bang on time for my period, and it lasted for the normal duration. Redid the blood test as soon as bleeding started and levels had dropped. So chances it didn't even implant properly. I had mild cramping 5 days after ovulation and bad stitchy pain in lower right abdomen, which stopped all of a sudden. So I'm not sure whether it was chromosomal, or a combination of exercise (I did lots of jumping around), green tea, raspberry leaf tea, low progesterone, the weather (it was really really hot those two weeks, and my apartment on the top floor was a sauna when I got home in the evenings).

So I'm all back to normal now as if nothing had happened (if I hadn't tested I probably would never even have known I was pregnant) and will try again, this time avoiding exercise and all teas until I know its safe. I'm considering using progesterone, but perhaps it would be better if the doc tested the levels first...

Thanks RiceT - yes, I read similar articles... probably there's no early pregnancy data on RL cause no one will take the chance in a study. Next time around I'm taking no chances.

Should I also avoid the myoplex??? I really dont want to cause thats what I use in my smoothies every morning. Is there another whey protein supplement that is safe for pregnancy?

firsttimemom,

I've had my progesterone levels checked lately and it's around 11 which is slightly low so it's a good idea to get it checked out coz that's the magic 'glue' that helps the ovary 'stick' to the uterine walls. I suspect that I've also had a miscarriage some time last year but didn't even know it coz I had awful cramps at around that time you had them and then my period came about 7 days late (i didn't test tho)...it wasn't until later that i found out about my low progesterone.

Thanks Mummy and Narnia. There are so many warnings about don't take this and don't do that, that you wonder a baby ever survives at all, and its kind of getting to me. I've switched to chemical-less living, soap with glycerin, and natural shampoo and conditioner instead of my old ones with chemicals etc etc, so lets see what happens this month. I also am now using clear plan to make sure I know when I ovulate and check if my cycle got thrown by the miscarriage. Narnia, at which point in your cycle did you test your progesterone levels? My doc said to use the suppositories anyway since they won't harm, but then I guess I'll have to use them for the full first trimester - if I get that far - without knowing whether or not that was the issue. That's why I'd like to test...

Thanks again to all of you for your encouragement. xx

firsttimemom,

I had my prog-level tested on around day 24 of my cycle, which was recommended by the doc, to see if I had conceived etc. Obviously didn't. I didn't know there were suppositories avaiable. Are they capsule form and do you need a prescription for them?

Oh Mummy, FANTASTIC story! wheeee! Well lets see if this time works for me. Narnia, yes you can get natural progesterone suppositories, one brand is Utrogestan. I think any ob/gy can prescribe them.

Mummy, did you use them the full first trimester?

Oh, I also ate heaps of candied ginger which I buy from city super. I love the stuff. Then I read that too much ginger is not good either :(

To be honest, I'd much rather it was something I did, then I could stop and it would all be OK. ugh.
