Hi all,
Can anyone kindly explain roughly what the rules for maternity leave in HK? I heard that you have to have worked at least 40weeks to be eligible for a paid leave.

You are entitled to 10 weeks at 4/5 pay if you have worked for a continous contract period of 40 weeks with your employer. The 40 weeks runs right up to the date you want to begin your leave, so you have almost 8/9 months of work included in that 40 weeks, whilst you are actually pregnant.I presume , depending on what kind of company you work for, you can negotiate the leave based on your time with them. I have just done exactly the same, but am now all set.

Thanks Phoenix! Are you taking a leave now? Congratulations!!! I am thinking about taking a job offer, but haven't conceived yet.

Here is some 'official' information on Maternity Leave from the Hong Kong Government:
http://www.labour.gov.hk/text/eng/public/wcp/EOConciseGuide/chapter6.htm
The HK Gov suggests 10 weeks at 4/5 pay, with an additional 4 weeks for medical disability if required (proof of dr note required)
All other sick leave is taken from annual sick leave allowance.
When sick leave allowance is used, other sick leave can be taken at 4/5 pay with a doctor's note.
BTW - most health insurance companies require 10 months of insurance prior to conception. So you might want to be sure either you are privately covered, or your new company has a great corporate policy which does not have this restriction.
Also, depending on the company and your role, I would be up front with them - but only do this AFTER you have an offer in writing and have accepted and are in detailed negotiations. When I was hired, I told my company that I was planning within the next 2 years and that excellent health insurance that covered full maternity was very important to me.
The next step is then telling them when it happens... and negotiating your paid and unpaid maternity leave / work at home / part time options... But you have time yet.

Just thinking...if I get pregnant this month, I won't be able to get maternity leave...Can you use sick leave for that reason? Sick leave(2weeks)+marriage leave(5days)+annual leave(20days) should be enough to give a birth to a baby???
Well, I am probably being too optimistic about the possibility of getting pregnant at the second IUI...

you get marriage leave??? Wow.
Negotiate with your company - you can always opt for maternity leave without pay if needed.

I was surprised, too. One good reason we haven't gotten married!!!

Jusr trying to get my head around this - would appreciate it if anyone can advise.
I have read the government info and this thread and it seems to me that, paid or unpaid, the maximum maternity leave you can take in HK is 10 weeks, plus an additional 4 weeks if you have a disability.
So, typically 10 weeks rising to an absolute max of 14 weeks.
Is this correct?

You are correct, Oonagh, but this is only the govt. statutory maximum. You can always try to negotiate with your company for extra time- paid or not.
