Is Dr Ho relatively expensive?

I have seen Dr Phillip Ho once and liked him. However, his fees seem to be on the expensive side. For others who have done some price comparisons, how does he compare? Other Dr's I am considering are Dr Alexander Doo and Dr Derek Lo.

Agree, Dr. Doo is great, also- you do not HAVE to have a scan every time. He is well worth the 500.

Do doctors normally charge extra for an "extended" consultation? Dr. Amelia Wong charged us extra because we were in her office for 16 minutes (which also included time for an ultrasound). Suffice to say, we didn't return to her after our first visit.

Also, HK$800 for a scan seems excessive unless it is a 4D machine. Our current doctor charges HK$200 each time in addition to the HK$600 for a consultation and basic lab test.

He charges HK$40000/HK$25000 for a c-section and HK$30000/HK$20000 for a vaginal delivery for private room/double room.

Dr Doo does 3/4D scans for the 800.

RiceT, our doctor charges $200 per ultrasound on an older machine (same as the one Amelia Wong uses, for which I think she charged $400-ish, in addition to her excessive consultation fee). When we went to get a 3D/4D scan from Dr. Lam, he charged us $1000. I don't see why I would want a 3D/4D scan every visit. Once was enough.

I'll send you the name of our OB via private mail. I can't decide if he is good or just OK, so I prefer to leave his name out of a public forum. At this point, we are sticking with him (he has lots of experience) for the delivery, but I wish he didn't stack his schedule in 15 minute slots, so he appears too rushed.

We tend to go on Saturdays, his busiest day, so that could explain it. Our next visit is midweek and maybe we won't have to wait as long (last visit was one hour, a new record) and get more than our average 15 minutes with him.

I cannot imagine how he could ever fit us (or any of his other patients) in an hour like Mrs Miggin's OB.

Thanks for the info, Tsuiwah.

We use Ho and have liked him. Lucy, I couldn't tell you if he's more expensive than most private docs.

He does not charge us extra for more time with him. (Although, thinking back, I think he once did charge extra for 'extended' u/s time...I seem to recall...I'm not sure why, now that I think of it, since he doesn't get charged more to use the machine; I'll have to look into it and ask.) We stay and ask questions for as long as we need to and he's been great. His u/s are definitely more expensive than the $200 charge...I think they're like $700-800.

I'm getting more and more disenchanted with the whole system though...with ALL charges being based on what kind of room you get. I especially feel this way after learning here that it's the DOCTORS that have CHOSEN to go with this M.O. It kind of tarnishes the doc-patient relationship, for they're personally choosing to take more money from me? Yes, we could get a standard/double room, but for personal and health reasons, we need the private. Should people be penalized for that? It's really bogus. Will our doctor be SLEEPING in the room with us? No. ....Actually, he should give us a discount for giving him a private room (and often a better view) in which to work with us. How about that. : )

I may sound completely stupid here. I am not pregnant but planning to next year. Is it common for people in HK to pay for prenatal and maternity expenses out of pocket instead of purchasing a supplemental insurance package (as I just found out that most medical insurance provided by employers do not cover maternity expenses)?

I have recently seem Dr Ho for abnormal pap results and consquential treatments. He seems to me to be very thorough and picked up something both my GP and OB/GYN in Oz obvioulsy didn't....(this all came out of us seeing him to check the mechanics were working - after trying for 6 mths) Sooooo .... getting back to initial q, we would most probably look to use him for helping us with our next pregnancy. Could anyone provide approx. costs for Dr Ho elective C section...

Thanks so much
