PreNatal Classes - group or private?

Hi

PreNatal Classes - group or private?

We are clueless, so we definately need the classes!! But just not sure which ones...

1. We both work, and travel for work and are finidng it challenging to fit 'scheduled' classes into our busy schedules (yes, we know this will change in a few months, but for now we are still busy!).

Is there a real benefit to going to a group class? Or is a private class okay?

I guess what I mean is it more about learning things or socialising with others?

2. We are debating between Annerly Midwives, Adventist and Matilda.

Any comments on those?

Thanks very much for your thoughts.

Some friends have said the group class they had 20 years ago in London has given them friends they are still close with, others in HK have said private lessons were more flexible to their schedules.

We are really undecided and appreciate your thoughts/comments/advice.

Just some thoughts...

I know good things about Annerley and Matilda classes. We did a group class; was good...but I also learned a lot of it from reading a good pregnancy book too.

Really sounds like your main issue is scheduling; for that reason, I'm guessing private is more suitable for you. You'll get the same info out of it (if it's a good program, obviously)...won't have the socializing, but the baby will bring you a whole new network of people (mom and dad groups) later anyway.

Thanks RiceT

We just want to learn from others if the 'socialising' while pregnant with those in similar conditions is beneficial... If we get a lot of replies that say 'absolutely, the best part of it was meeting other women/couples in similar condition' we will have to find a way to make the schedule work.

On the other hand, if most women/couples in HK go to the class, and just learn and don't really socialise or don't get much out of the socialising, then it isn't realy worth it...

You can totally get the socializing out of it; it's really up to you. With a bunch of couples in the class, there are bound to be some that will want to socialize (and others that don't care either way...and that's fine too; pregnancy's a busy time!); so if you're interested too, those interested will likely all hook up.

We found the group to be valuable and have made friends from it. And whether it be from those friends or from the other couples in the group, we have gained information even through our conversations and each others questions in class. We also get the news about everyone's baby as it's born; another nice aspect. : )

There's support to be had in groups--not the kind of support you'd get from your family, etc., but a support that's also valuable, especially for those living far from home.

Hope that helps.

It depends on the class. Some do role playing that is great for communicating a birth plan and exploring options - benefits/risks of interventions offered during labour.
