Blood Test

I went to the doc yesterday after getting a positive result from a home pregnancy kit and without giving me a urine or blood test, she did an ultrasound to confirm the pregnancy. Just wondering if running a urine or blood test is purely at the doctor's discretion, that there's no standard procedure and doing an ultrasound confirms instantly. I still think that a blood test gives more info than just confirmation of pregnancy and since I forgot to ask the doc at the time, I wonder if it's still wise to get one at my second visit in 10 days time.

The same thing happened to me where I was given an ultrasound during a visit to my doctor after getting a positive from home pregnancy test. I was only asked to give a urine sample after nothing showed up on my scan (emptied my bladder before visiting the doctors). If this is your first pregnancy, then the doctor should do a blood test. I think I had my blood test on my second visit. Maybe ask your doctor about the blood test next time you visit.

What is the issue? Are you asking if you are really pregnant? If so, then a scan could show an early pregnancy, by showing the early gestation sac. Or are you asking whether a blood test would give more information than an ultrasound? If so, then the answer is no.

I think what you are really saying though is this: "I felt my O&G could have done a better job of communicating with me." And I would ahgree that communication is often not optimal.

Thanks, I just thought a blood test was routine that's all. The scan did show the early gestation sac but the heartbeat could not be detected, the doc said it was too early as I'm 5 weeks. Even so, I'm a little nervous about that, hopefully when I go back in two weeks time the heartbeat will be there.

Chy, let me know how you get on, is this your first pregnancy? This is my second and I`m about 4 weeks so the doctor couldn`t sense a heartbeat either, that`s why I had to have the urine test just to double check. Don`t be nervous and don`t be afraid to ask your doctor loads of questions.

Hi Chy,

Sounds perfectly normal to me. Now in my 13 th week and exactly same happened to me. Internal ultrasound at 5 weeks no heartbeat, but doc said no cause for concern, went back 10 days later and there it was! Please try not to worry, they really do know what they are saying and doing!!

Thank you so much for your valuable advice Mrs Miggins. I will definitely ask for the blood test at my next visit where I should be around 8 weeks. I wonder if the fetal heartbeat will be detected this time, this I'm anxious about! My doc gave me folate tablets but she did mention about pre-natal vitamins but have yet to give me those. I've been taking GNC's Prenatal Formula for awhile now but she askd me to stop taking those, so I better get some from her next time. Thanks for reminding me about this.
