IUI timing

Has anyone done IUI without HCG shot to induce ovulation? By using ovulation test kit at home?

My follicles were different sizes, and there was one big one, so the Dr. asked me to do ovulation test at home to see if the signal to ovulate comes out naturally. Then the test was positive, the next day I went for IUI, but the urine test at the clinic came out negative, so it's either I have already ovulated or the home test result was false. Doctor gave me a shot to induce ovulation anyway just in case the test was false, then did the IUI right after. Now, my question is, if the home ovulation test result was false, then the real ovulation will happen in the next 36 hours or so after the injection, so the IUI done right after the injection would not work???? Washed sperm only last for 18hours-24hours, as opposed to 3-4 days naturally, so I am worried if my "window" is covered by this single IUI...

Hi Simplythebest,

Nice see you again too! Yes, I have had very relaxing summer. It really did me good, and I am fully recovered emotionally to try again. How are you holding up in your 2WW? I really hope this IUI will be it for you!!! Keeping my fingers, legs, everything crossed for you.

It seems the reason why I didn't get the injection in the first place was that there were smaller follicles that may grow if we pushed it a few more days, although one was very mature (18mm) and ready to rupture. So I got one more GonalF to help grow the smaller ones while waiting to see if the biggest one naturally ovulate with natural hormonal signal. In other words, Dr didn't want to rule out the possibility for having more than one egg jusb because there was one mature egg at that moment. But according to the home ovulation kit, I ovulated with one mature follicle. (I wonder what happens to the smaller ones...) Assistant said even with smaller ones, we still have chance of having multiple eggs that are good. (ON the day of IUI, the smaller ones were 16mm and 17mm).

How fast does the follicle grow? I mean, what size should it be on, say, day 10, 12, 13 - if you have a 30 day cycle?

I am not sure the implication of cycle length in terms of the size of follicles, but anywhere between 16 and 20 is considered to be mature. Do you use hormonal assistant (like gonal F) to help your cycle? Mine started from around 10mm at day 8, then 13mm at day 11, then 18mm at day 13, then 20mm at Day 15 (just the biggest ones).

Hi MM

Nice to see you again, generallu follocles increases its size 1.5 to 2 mm daily and I agree 16 and 20 mm are good size. But during my natural cycle my egg size is around 24 to 26 mm around my ovulation and when i did IUI with injectible it was 18 to 20 mm.

If I am right OPK shows dark line it means one is going to ovulate in next 12 hrs. So MM I think your IUI timing was fine.

Good luck

Hi Tillu,

I have been out of the loop for sometime. How are things with you? Wow, your natural follicle size is big. I never measured the follicles on natural cycle, really...

Thanks for the advice on the timing of IUI. If there is only one egg, then I just wonder why use Gonal F, but hey, I guess things don't go as you plan sometimes (or most of the times...)

Hi Macaron,

I'm not an expert but if you're using clear plan, it must be accurate, it hasn't failed on me. So you're timing is just right esp with the shot. But i'm also wondering why the doc din't give you the shot day before the IUI, he can monitor the size of the egg and not rely on the kit.

We take clomid just to make sure we produce eggs and ovulate on time. For gonal-f, to make sure that it becomes big and many. Correct me if i'm wrong, from my understanding, if the biggest one raptures, then all the other small ones will be raptured too, which means the small ones are of no use as they are not the right size. Anyway, whatever it is, just relax now as you're timing is perfect. Fingers crossed, best of luck ;-)

Hi Crystal,

I don't know about clomid, but as far as my case is concerned, GonalF is for just what you said-to produce more eggs. Dr didn't give HCG injection because if he did, then that would ensure the rapture in the next 24hurs or so, but will rule out the possibility of other smaller eggs to become bigger. On the other hand, if he waited untiil the natural ovulation, then the smaller ones might have time to become bigger by the time when the biggest one decided to rapture.

How are things with you? Yes, we need to relax...thanks a lot!!!
