no cold cut meats???

I am currently 6 weeks pregnant with my first baby and after eating a nice (what I assumed was healthy ham and salad roll) I went off to see my gp for my first check up... she proceeded to tell me "make sure you dont eat ANY sliced cold cut meat from the deli along with ANY soft cheeses" absolutely don't eat it.. This is due to something called listeria which can occur whilst eating these sorts of food.


I had no idea and have already eaten heaps of ham, turkey and chicken in the past 6 weeks... this pretty much stops me from having any sort of take away food such as salads and salad rolls.


can anyone share there experiences on what I can't eat.....


I can live without the soft cheeses and pate and seafood, but ham and turkey aswell....

I know you're not suppsed to eat soft cheeses like brie, camembert, feta, blue vein cheeses as they do contain listeria which is a kind of bacteria that lurks in food. However you can eat edam, cheddar( any hard cheese), cream cheese and cottage cheese. I think you are adviced to only eat deli meat if you know they have been properly reheated, though I have to admit that I've ate fantastic ham and cheese sandwiches from from shops before finding out and so far I'm ok, touch wood and I'm about 3 months gone now. I do however stay away from cold seafood sandwiches.


If you are feeling fine with no headaches, fever or vomiting, I think you are fine but if you are really worried have any word with your GP so he/she can put your worries to rest.

I eat a lot of deli meats also and as mummy said you just need to ask the place your buying from to heat it up so that it's nice and hot. Not warm but hot and then you'll be fine.

Soft cheeses are OK as long as they have been made with pasteurised milk. You may not be able to check at the deli, but if you buy them from the supermarket it should say on the label.

Yes, if you eat adequately processed foods, you'll be fine. The question is do you trust your deli to adequately process foods.


By the way, listeria causes meningitis in newborns in the first month of life. It is an infection of the brain and commonly causes permanent and irreversible brain damage. So the question is, how much do you trust your deli?

Oh, forgot to say, at 6 weeks, it's early enough not to cause any problems. So don't sweat the sandwich that you had (or am having now).

If 6 weeks is early enough not to cause any problems then how far in is enough to cause problems when its born? Will you know that you have listeria?

I have just read a text book "Child Development". It says that a fetus in the womb is susceptible to toxins and pollutants in mother's environment from the 3rd week onwards.


For convenient, hot and cooked lunch in Hong Kong, try congee and noodles in local Chinese small restaurants. There are plenty around.

Okay here's the scoop. Listeria is a bacteria infection as as such, the fetus won't get sick if YOU don't get sick. It can however pick up something after the "water breaks". Thus the closer to delivery, the more the risk. Unless of course YOU get infected (not just a carrier, see above about group B strep). The liklihood of that is small but not zero.


The fetus is actually suspcpetable the moment of conception of any toxins. But why make you feel guilty if you don't even know you're pregnant this the "third week".


As for Toxo, yeah, that's bad. It is call the TORCH syndrome for common infectious cause of birth defects:


Toxoplasmosis (exposure to cats)

Others

Rubella

CMV (cytomegoloviris)

Hepatitis


Do you really miss cold cuts that much to take a chance no matter how small? The risks are quite small until the time of delivery.
