My doc asked me today if I wanted the shot. I was a bit apprehensive and told her that I would think about it. In the past everyone I know (pregnant or not) who has had a flu shot has had an awful case of the flu afterwards. I wonder whether to take my chances in the hope that I dont get flu - however on the other side there is the 'avian flu' worry.
Anyone had one? Any nasty outcomes?

The Centre for Disease Control (CDC) states that Influenza vaccination is recommended for all women either pregnant or anticipated to be pregnant during flu season. Our obstetricians concur with this.

I had one a couple of weeks ago when I was 32 weeks. I asked for it because I'd heard some health official on the tv recommend that pregnant women should have one. I was warned there was a slight risk of a reaction (fever) for a couple of days, but I didn't have any reaction at all.

We have an OB appt next Saturday (about 30 weeks) and will ask him what he suggests (and who should do it).
From basic research, it seems to be strongly recommended every year for pregnant women in the 2nd and 3rd trimester.
Except for those people who:
Have had an adverse reaction to a flu shot before
Have a fever
Are severely allergic to eggs or egg products (the ingredients for the flu shot are grown inside eggs)
I have never had one before, but am considering it this year. I am worried about getting sick for a few days after, but it can be worse if you get the full blown flu instead.
One note, the flu shot is not related to the Avian Flu, so this is not about 'panic reaction' to the news, it is a normal pregnancy question.
The Mayo Clinic Says:
http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/influenza/AN00651/FORCESSL=false&
In October 2004, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended flu shots for all women who will be pregnant during the 2004-2005 influenza season. In North America, the influenza season is usually from October to May.
Because the flu shot is made from a killed (inactivated) virus, it's considered safe during any stage of pregnancy. Pregnant women should not have FluMist, a nasal spray influenza vaccine, because it contains live influenza virus.
Pregnancy affects the mother's immune system and also puts added stress on her cardiovascular system. For this reason, pregnant women are at increased risk of complications, such as pneumonia, from influenza. In addition, pregnant women are more likely to need hospitalization for treatment of complications from the flu than are nonpregnant women of the same age.

"Preventing the Flu
Here are some things you can do to help lower your risk of catching or spreading the flu virus:
Avoid large crowds whenever possible
Wash your hands regularly
When you cough or sneeze, be sure to cover your mouth and nose with a tissue
Don’t pick up used tissues
Avoid sharing cups and utensils
If you do have the flu, stay home to avoid infecting others"

Witty,
Where were you able to get it for your son? I've already taken mine - do every year with no untoward effects. However, the clinic that I visited would not administer to my 2 year old.
Cri - I believe your research to be right on and suspect your doctor will advise you to have the vacination. Contracting the flu during pregnancy can be deadly for the unborn child.

It is not just allowed but is reconnended for Pg mothers. We usually do not give it during the first three months, not because of any proven problems but just that we try to give NO medications that can be avoided during that period.
