I own a cat and a dog. And am now 18 weeks. I was told not to feed pets, not to clean up after them and to wash your hands if you do get in contact with them. Is this safe??? Honestly very worried!

There is disease called Toxoplasmosis that you canget from cats. Lets put that in perspective, in 30 years in prictisein the US and Canada I saw three cases, two of the mothers worked for VETS.
If your cat goes out and hunts then you should be careful and NOT touch the litter, for house-bound ats there is no problem. French patients are particularly cautious as tatare dishes involving uncooked beef are also a concern.

Thanks for the advice. As a side note, it's also nice to have someone else (i.e. hubby) to clean the cat box! ;)

As Moreton says above, do not clean your cat's litter box (but be sure someone else does it! :).
Good point too on being careful if you have animals that 'hunt' outdoors and bring home 'presents'.
Otherwise, it's fine to be with your animals, etc. during pregnancy. Many veterinarians even work up to their due date.

You are either -ve or +ve to Toxoplasmosis which can be found out via blood test. If you are -ve then you need to be very careful with cat litter, soil/gardening, washing veggies very well, raw meat (including knives & chopping board cross contamination). I understand (Dr Moreton may correct me) that if you are +ve pre pregnancy then it really isn't such a big issue it is only if you are infected for the FIRST time during pregnancy that there could be a problem. I am -ve and during both my pregnancies I had regular Toxoplasmosis blood tests done to ensure that I hadn't become infected during my pregnancy.
