A friend of mine told me that expecting moms shouldn't eat nuts or food w/traces of nuts, as this will cause future allergies (some which can be serious)in their little ones. I assumed that this would be the opposite. Anyone else hear this? Could you share your thoughts? Thanks!

From the Hershey site "When there is no family history of peanut allergy, breast-feeding women do not have to avoid peanuts." Me nor my family have a history of nut allergies, so I should be alright. I'm not giving up peanut butter!!! ;) Nuts are a good source of protein as well.

There is a lot of conflicting information on this topic - because of the recent rise in nut allergies people are determined to try and do the best that they can in order to counteract the possibilites of it.
I have a severe allergy to cashews (peanuts, almonds, pistachois, walnuts are all okay.) I ate the other nuts in moderation during pregnancy and breastfed while eating them as well. My daughter, now 18 months old, loves all nuts and doesn't seem to have a problem with them.
My friend, who doesn't have any nut allergies, her husband has a shrimp allergy, avoided all nuts during pregnancy, while breastfeeding, and her daughter ended up with severe eczema problem - not necessarily due to nuts, but other things. i'm not sure avoiding any one type of food helps prevent allergies.
it's a complicated situation - I seemingly DEVELOPED my cashew allergy later in life. (I used to eat cashews, stopped eating them, ate them unknowingly one day in HK - and had major problems.) I've been doing lots of research trying to figure out why this happened, and there is no conclusive answer.
