I'm thinking of having my 3rd baby at Queen Mary. First 2 were born at Matilda but our insurance is different this time and it will really cost us alot if we choose that option again. I'm curious about how much it will cost me to have my baby at Queen Mary, given a normal delivery and no drugs. I'm just trying to figure out if the cost savings will be worth giving up the special care at Matilda.

$300 (+$100 for my A&E charge inc. helicopter from island). But it was a horrible experience.

experience is similar to Lammum - if you're an expert in having a baby (#3 sounds like you're an expert) QM is worth it - you can tell them waht you want. THe ward room - not so great - and food is gross (my mom brought me food) but the nurses and staff are nice, and although they don't PAMPER you, they are there and available for you...
Drugs, no drugs, epidural, no epidural - doesn't matter - it'll run you aroudn $600 for the delivery. My daughter had a very long run with jaundice after wards and was seen by QM pediatricians for virtually no cost as well...

Yes, don't need to be pampered. Proximity and quality of medical care is really all that matters for #3. We're 5 minutes away so can have meals brought in. My #2 was a quick labor. After about 2 hours of mild/moderate contractions I dilated very quickly and my doc was telling me not to push. Honestly I don't even remember making any effort to push. There was nothing I could do to control what was happening and he came out on his own!
If they would let me out in 24 hours great. I'd much rather have a midwife come to my house to check up on us.

Am making a mentalnote to have all meals delivered to QMH, lol!
Actually the food has always been rubbish there. Remember my Mum bringing me Bolognaise when I broke my arm.

I had a great experience delivering both my babies at Queen Mary's at a cost of $200 each. I'm sorry to hear geiboyi had a bad experience, it really is the luck of the draw with midwives there I suppose. Mine were great, although very busy, and did ask about my birth plan. I had Hulda Thorey with me at home for the first half of each labour, shame she couldn't come into the delivery ward too but it was her or my husband! Good luck!

Just spent a week there. Epidural went wrong, they had to do a blood patch. All in all, with delivery, epidural, ct scan, blood patch procedure, work from midwives, ob, anasthesiologist (x2),neurologist and neurosurgeon, 6 full days for me and baby = $650
Food is crappy!!! Yes, tell your partner to bring you food. Visiting hours 12-1pm // 6-8pm

Epidural going wrong - with the blood patch - is actually quite common. (I just HAD the same experience.) According to my father, about 1% of the population has a problem with this spinal fluid leakage - so it's not a function of Queen Mary. I went through the same experience - spinal fluid leakage, and the blessed doctors had to do THREE blood patches before the final one took. (not in HK - did this in Seoul.)

hkchoichoi, 3 blood patches!!!??? I am so sorry for you. I just had one and didn't like it one bit. Been 2 weeks now so I am hoping it will stick!
I could not imagine the stress you must have gone thru doing it 3 times!!!!
Never thought that it was a QMH thing though. I signed the consent form and knew the risk was at 1%. With chances that low, you just assume that it won't apply to you!!! The head anasthesiologist (Dr. Rebecca Chan) did the blood patch procedure and she was extremely helpful and professional.
However, I do believe that epidurals are not as common at QMH as they are in certain other hospitals. Only 12% of patients request it. I guess the c-sections are more common, and the rest, well, they come in so late in their labour that the epidural is just not an option...

CRJI-
at 2 weeks - I'm sure the blood patch will stick - you know within an instant - I assume you had those nasty spinal headaches? Ugh - they were so horrible!! I had my first blood patch and they sat me up and i said "my head still hurts." So later that afternoon they had to send me back down (they make you go to OR for this) and I had another one done by another doc, and it worked - only to have my headaches return a couple of hours later.
my dad (he's an ob) told me not to bother doing it anymore, and just to control the pain with tylenol -he consulted with a bunch of his friends back in the US, and they said that it wasn't worth it to try the third time. But I begged the docs in seoul to try again, because the pain was too great - even with tylenol - I walked around at a right angle - staring at the floor which isn't much of a life if you ask me. They did it a 3rd time, and took a lot more blood than they had before - and then finally - MIRACLE - I was cured!!!
I had a c-section - you get a spinal anaesthesia for it - which is similar to an epidural - so it's the same thing...I think a lot of people opt for natural at Queen Mary (which is what I had with my first)
All in all, my experience at Queen Mary was far to my experience in Seoul - I had a private room in Seoul, and all the bells and whistles- while I was in a ward room at Queen Mary - I'd rather repeat my Queen Mary experience ANY DAY.
How is your baby? Sounds like he/she is just a week younger than mine!

Sorry - I never explained.
My horrible experience was basically a long, long labour (27 hours total,8 hours second stage)which ended in a vacuum delivery. I got an epidural (didn't want one at first, but changed my mind) which basically just stopped everything. I couldn't move, was lying on my back, not allowed to even lie on my side (baby was facing the wrong way so v. painful). Anyway, I had them turn off the epidural so I could feel to push, but ended up w/ the vacuum, for which they did not give me any pain relief (and there were 2 doctors - the first one couldn't put the vacuum thing in properly, had to call a different doctor, who then asked the first if she wanted to 'have another go'). Anyway, looking back it was my fault (a little bit) - I was in a lot of pain when admitted, and a bit panicky, so they put me straight into the delivery room. I hadn't realised that once I was on the bed that was it until the baby arrived, so I had 16 hours lying on my back. There was also stuff like them breaking my waters without telling me, and having gaggles of gossiping midwives and various other spectators in the room throughout the process, and a partner who was too worried about offending anyone to tell them all to get lost.
But still, I expect I will go back next time as I can't bring myself to pay the horrific private charges (and don't have insurance that will cover pregnancy). But I will hopefully have an idea what to expect, and I hope things will go better...

That sounds like my first labor. Once I got the epidural everything stopped, was on the bed 14 hrs. Pushed 2 hrs and my doctor told me I was one push away from needing the vacuum. Second labor I wanted to avoid the epidural for that reason, but of course it got unbearable and I asked for it again. Once I got into the delivery room they told me no, b/c my baby was on his way out. So the "unbearable" only lasted about 5 minutes and my baby was out in no time. it was great (to be so quick). I'm very anti-epidural this time around.
