To all those who live in Beijing...
TOTALLY nothing to do with pregnancy, but I posted this in the travel and hotels and nary an answer...
A close friend from london is travelling in China and wanted to urgently know of an artsy sort of hotel to stay for a day in Beijing so she could see the great wall. You know, somewhere where more journalistic/artistic/ writer/theater type folks hang out instead of business types? Any suggestions???

How about the Commune at the Great Wall...it is as artsy as one can possbily get in China. Famous architects designed it, installation art. Right at the Wall...but don't know if it offers traditional hotel rooms. Only been there for a reception and to eat. Do an Internet search for info.

commune by the wall is gorgeous, but a bit expensive... so unless you don't mind paying US$ 1000 or more for a night, then you might want to consider the red capital club- a renovated courtyard house in the hutongs of beijing, with 5 luxury rooms. only around RMB 1000 per night, very artsy, mao memorabilia all over the place (simmilar to the restaurant with the same name in another courtyard house, same owner, only 5 mins walking distance away)- a genuine hutong experience. also v interesting is the bar in the bunker underground. descend the steep steps from the courtyard with care. enjoy it!
