No fertility specialists at Beijing United

I spoke with a nurse and a manager of their OB/BYN department -- they don't even know what IUI is. Any idea where else, if you're not a Chinese speaker?

I know Peking University hospital has a fertility center, but where can someone not fluent in Chinese go?

Stinkerbelle,

I go to PUMC for OB/GYN and my Dr. is fluent in English, she graduated from Columbia Med School in the US. They have a special dept for "VIP" (their description, not mine!) and and foreign patients. The lab techs and support staff aren't fluent in English, but the doctors are. Maybe worth a try? Number is 65295269. Good luck.

I tried there. We seem to be confused now.

My husband's doctor in the states recommended IUI; the doctor at PUMC insists on IVF. Wasn't even willing to consider IUI.

Anyone got some more ideas?

There are problems with Intra Uterine Insemination in China due to Chinese law.

Wai Tai Tai, which gyno did you see at the PUMC? The doctor I saw does not speak any English and she is only there a few days a week so its very inconvenient.

ears, I go to PUMC and found that many doctors speak english. Like Liu Ping, Chen Xin Na, Zhang Li Ju (she's the (oldest - 70+) one in charge who does all the intakes) and some more I've met but I forgot the names. They are all working in the fertility department. The nurse that does all the IVF-administration also speaks english.

Dr. Gai ...she is awesome, but is a professor and only sees patients certain days, as you mentioned.

Wai Tai Tai, Mrs. B, thanks for your info.

I wanted to make an appointment with Dr. Gai but the receptionist says that she is an OB and I shouldn't need to see her until I am actually pregnant (I'm TTC).

Mrs. B, can you let me know whether docs Liu Ping, Chen Xinna and Zhang Liju are OB/GYN or just GPs?

I had an appointment with Dr. Deng Chengyan today. She's an gyno and was very good. Speaks good English.

I get the feeling that PUMCH is quite willing to perform IUI. This is the first time I've met with Dr. Deng and she asked me whether I wanted to undergo IUI next week since I'm on CD10.

I am glad to hear it, ears. Would you kindly update me? I met with a male doctor at PUMC, who immediately rejected IUI without examining me or my records thoroughly, and wanted to go straight to IVF.

To be honest, my first thought is that his incentive was financial -- IUI costs less than 10% of IVF. I would be quite happy to hear more about Dr. Deng.

Could you please forward her details to me?

I'm suprised that your doctor insists on IVF without trying IUI. Has he given you a reasonable medical explanation?

So far, everytime I've met with Dr. Deng, she's been very efficient. I speak to her in my limited Chinese, and if there are certain terms I do not quite understand, she will use a bit of English. She studied in Australia.

Anyway, you can arrange to meet her by calling the special care section of the PUMCH at 65295269. She works there Mon to Fri between 8-11am. However, she has agreed to come in on Sunday morning for me since I will be ready for a HCG shot.

She actually works at the fertility centre in the older section of the hospital. Their direct line is 6529 6221. However, I don't think anyone at that section speaks English. Your best bet is to call the special care unit at 65295269 and arrange to meet her in the mornings.

Actually he's not "my doctor"...at least not after that initial encounter. He gave no medical explanation -- just "No IUI". I really do think the rationale was he wanted the $$$.

I now go to Dr. Zhou Li at Beijing United for Gynecology. She's done all the testing on me and it all works right.

The problem seems that our motility may be a little low; but according to our US doctor, IUI could work.

I'll try your Dr. Deng. Thanks!

A couple of my friends also went to Beijing United and their feedback is positive. But one of them decided to switch to the PUMCH (in fact she's giving birth this week) because the doctors there are more experienced.

She says, although the service at the PUMCH isn't as friendly, they've seen all kinds of births there. But I guess that's something else to consider further down the line!
