Our first baby will be born in August and my husband and I would like to go on one last holiday for just the two of us. We keep thinking that we should go somewhere "we can't go with kids", but since I am five months pregnant, such places are probably not suitable at this stage, either! We are pretty active and adventurous travellers nornally (thinking about Sri Lanka or Zanzibar). Does anybody have any suggestions or recommendations?

Great idea!!!
Sri Lanka is wonderful, lots to do and see.
The Bale in Bali does not allow children, great private villas, very romantic, excellent healthy food. (advertise sometimes on this site or google them)

But do you think is is ok to travel in Sri Lanka whilst I am pregnant? I read that I would need vaccinations to go there, and I don't really want to risk the baby's health. Our baby was actually conceived in Bali(!) so while it is really special to us, we will probably go somewhere else for a change.

I actually went to Sri Lanka at 5 months pregs (just this past Feb) and while it was gorgeous and had the nicest people, it was a rough trip. We stayed near the beach areas, but going from place to place was rough because the roads are not great and the drivers obey NO traffic laws, so it was rather scary at times. I don't think I was too big yet, but I felt each and every bump in the road and started to worry after a while. I beat myself up for not having just picked an easier vacation spot and worried about how it was all effecting the baby. I am not normally a worrier, but I did have a hard time with this spot. Other drawbacks were uncomfortable beds/pillows, distance from the airport after crazy flight times and lack of food for me. Spicy has been giving me bad heartburn and that is basic there. We did end up at a beautiful resort that took good care of us (after much searching), but I would say I wouldn't go again while I was pregnant. I would definitely go after, though! My older daughter (2 1/2 year) LOVED all the wildlife and the nice people. Oh, and I didn't do any vaccinations, but brought plenty of insect repellant.

We've stayed out of China since ours was born, which means we haven't been to Guilin yet, or the Yellow Mountains. Just getting around with the local driving standard and the lack of seatbelts is too scary for me with youngsters, never mind that ours would have a hard time with the food.
The Maldives is a more romantic thought. All those beautiful little bungalows over the water...but we won't do something like that until ours is a reliable swimmer.
And I'm glad we went to Angkor before baby. All those steep, super worn stairs, that pre-dawn wake-up for the sunrise over Angkor Wat....stunning trip but not childfriendly IMO.
Australia and New Zealand are fabulous with kids, so no need to push to get there now.
Enjoy it....it'll be a while before you can do exactly what you want. And you're not so big yet that it's hard to enjoy a nice dinner :-)

There has been a thread on this fairly recently maybe worth searching it as there were some nice suggestions!

Thanks for your thoughts everybody! I will have a search on the forums to see what I can find...Iamsmak, how long did you stay in Sri Lanka? And can you let me know the name of the resort that you liked? We went to the Maldives for our honeymoon, and if anybody else out there is thinking of having a babymoon, then I highly recommend the Four Seasons for a special treat. I don't think we could afford to go there again for a while though! Am also toying with Koh Samui just because it is easy to get to from HK and strangely, we have never been. Would this be a good option? I guess we are looking for somewhere that has a mixture of activities to do, since I won't be able to dive, but that isn't too hectic; someplace that has good food and a some good spas!

Sri Lanka - I was pregnant there too, and loved it.
Our favoutirte hotel is the Kandalama
http://www.aitkenspencehotels.com/kandalama/
You can get a car and driver from the airport or from Sri Lanka and do a mini tour staying in fabulous hotels like:
Kandalama, The Tea Factory and Browns Beach Hotel (near the airport for your last night).
There is also the new Mandarin in Galle, and some small nice hotels like The Sun House.
If you want to stay somewhere fabulous, eat great food and relax with lots of different activities do look into Kandalama.

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions! I am having a really easy pregnancy, so am definitely still tempted by Sri Lanka. Crj, thanks for all the tips on hotels, I will definitely check them out. If anybody has any other tips on where to stay and where to visit in Sri Lanka, I would love to hear from you!

One of the things you might want to think about is how long you're going to be here and if there're places you'd really love to get to before you relocate (assuming you will).
For us, although we have yet to get to the Maldives, they're still quite accessible from Europe so we aren't kicking ourselves for not having gone before we had a little one running about.
