Hi there, please advise if it's better not to travel when you are in the early stage of your pregnancy or even TTC.

My dentist has once told me that getting on a plane during 1st trim can cause m/c!!! Is that true????

My friend has travelled a lot while being pg and all is well. However, another friend has a risk of miscarriage so she chooses not to fly anywhere. Many people are pg and travel by air before realising they are pg. So as you can see it varies from person to person. As Hen said ask your Dr and do what you feel is right for you.

Well2-

long time no chat! I travelled during both of my pregnancies in the first trimester - no problem. I was advised by my dad to take it easy, but he didn't advise me against travel.

The bad part was I had major morning sickness during my second pregnancy - and I was away from foods I wanted to eat, and stuck at a hotel and not in the comforts of my own home - that part was sucky.

Hi Well2,

Some Drs will suggest that you may not wish to travel to places that you would not be able to access medical services of the standard you expect during the first trimester. My Dr suggested this because of my miscarriage history. It was just a suggestion though, and (as the Dr said) mostly to give me peace of mind. All this meant was that we changed a holiday destination from one country to another (with better hospitals, etc) - still flying though and Dr has no problem with that.

I agree with Hen, it is best to talk to your own Dr and do what you feel is best based on their advice.

Good luck :-)

Dr. Moreton, LOL!!!!!!!

I travelled twice by the time I was 10 weeks, and another long trip at 16 weeks. I'd had two previous m/cs and was careful not to carry heavy suitcases etc, but that was it.

In the days before abortions were freely available, it was amazing what young women would do trying to bring on a m/c. Jumping on trampolines for hours at a time was a favorite. Starving themseles, swallowing amazing combinations of OTC drugs etc. rarely did it ever work. If you have a really solid one in there nothing will bring on a m/c.

On the other hand,I remember telling a patient not to fly as she had had some spotting, she refused my advice and said she would go. The flight took off at 2 and at 4 she miscarried, but I omitted part of the story,at the last minute she changed her mind and decided to take my advice. She was at home when she lost the Pg. BUT if she had been on the plane everyone would have said that that caused it. You have to being doing something when you M/C that does not mean that that was what caused it, some are just going to happen.

I flew a lot in my first trimester because of work (most of the flights long-haul too, unfortunately). Luckily, this did not seem to affect the baby, although jet lag and morning sickness was a pretty unpleasant c*cktail. I think that like with everything else during pregnancy you just have to allow for the fact that you may not be as active and energetic as you may have been before. Just be a little bit more careful about allowing yourself extra time to get to places and make an effort to walk around the plane to aid circulation. I am five months now and am going on holiday over Easter for 10 days and whilst before, I would want to drag myself around the whole country trying to see everything, this time I will restrict my sightseeing down to a couple of key areas with lots of R&R in between!
