Hi,
I had a dating scan at about 6 weeks then a further one at 11 weeks and went for an optional scan at 12 weeks to check for Downs Syndrome, otherwise the next scheduled scan would have been at 19 -20 weeks. This has been the public system timetable. I understand that privately you will probably have many more.

Many USs are done for 'fun'
The schedule that has been proved to have a positive impact on the outcome of pregnancies is an early one possibly at 8 weeks to be sure the pregnancy is viable. An US at 11-12 to measure the nuchal fold for diagnisis of Down syndrome.
Anatomical scan at 18-20 weeks to look for developement of different organs. (most important)A scan in the last trimester, perhaps at 36 weeks to check fetal growth, fluid volume, placental appearance and blood flow.

Best Man - I would advise having frequent scans, whther for 'fun' or not. It allows you and your wife to see the progress of your childs growth and helps you bond with the baby in utero.
I have videos of all my scans and they are great to watch for us and for our extended family who also want to be a part of the process.

Our gyn vidoes each scan as he does them. Ask yours if he can do the same, is quite easy to do. You may need to bring your own tape.

provided the dates are accurate, anytime between 12 and 14 weeks should be fine.
the aim is to perform nuchal test (Down's screening) and it can be done anytime between 12 and 13weeks + 6 days
