We have heard so many horror stories about maids in Hong Kong plus the fact that it seems quite difficult to find a maid with newborn baby care experience we are investigating the option of daycare centres in Hong Kong.
Are there day care centres in HK that take care of babies during the working day? What type of qualifications do typical caretaker have and how should we go about looking for a day care centre?
Any advice would be much appreciated

Not sure where you are getting your horror stories from... Every expat mum I know in HK has a helper with newborn baby experience that they are happy with. Am sure there are horror stories just as there are horror stories with day care centres you just need to be careful when hiring and best thing to do is get reccomendations. I do not know of any day care centres in HK nor of anyone who uses day care centres because the overwhelming majority of people in HK use in home helpers.

Actually we have just hired a maid paid particular attention to treating her quite well as we want to entrust her with our new born baby. But to our dismay we have found that she is lies to us and is stealing petty things from us. We gave here a handsome chinese new year cash gift, have relieved her of night time feedings (since we breast feed), took her out on her birthday, and treat her like part of the family etc etc.
I'm not sure if we are just unlucky and there are plenty of great helpers out there. We are thinking of firing her but that is an expensive process and we don't want to risk getting another bad maid.
If you know of any good helpers you could recommend please do so. Our requirements are very simple: honest, trustworthy, likes children and can handle basic household chores.
The other reason we would consider a daycare centre is that there is a sense of responsibility and accountability. Their core business is taking care of babies so I would have more trust in them doing a good job as long as they are an established business.

As catnip mentioned, day care as we know it is practically non-existent. Most nurseries in HK require either a parent or helper to be present.
Have you considered the nanny option? Many parents who are both working full-time choose this option as they might in UK, US and Australia. Of course it is a lot more expensive than a helper, but then again, it is a completely different kind of service. A professionally trained nursery nurse or nanny will be native English speaking (usually from UK, Oz and NZ), and are specifically trained and qualified to provide physical, mental and developmental care for children in their charge, in the home environment, and in the absence of parents. For more information, please contact myself, Shirley at rentamum@netvigator.com, or call me on 2523 4868. I would be happy to discuss your childcare needs in more detail.

there are child care centers in hong kong. they are supervised by the social welfare department. creches are for 0 - 2 and nursary is for 2.8+. in child care centres the teacher child ratio is 1 teacher for every 8 children. teachers need to be registered child care workers to be employed in these centers. to be quite honest the ones that i have seen that take babies look horrible. poor little kids in metal cots. not really the kind of place i would like to send my child.
