Hi, I have just completed my third IUI round with injectables. I got pregnant on my secound go but miscarried. Just wondering how long I should stick with the IUI before moving to IVF - any one with similar experience?

thanks simplythebest, my age is an issue due to see doctor again this week. he seems to think I have longer than my age would imply because my ovaries react well to stimulation, however the quality of our sperm is an issue too. I must admit that the invasiveness of IVF is putting me off & the cost really scares me. sorry i'm rambling

Rose, I think at some point you need to really decide how much you would like a baby. I understand about the invasiveness of IVF, but it still carries the highest success rate. And as far as age goes, don't count on being able to beat the statistics. No matter how great you feel and how fit/healthy/whatever you are.

I had 3 unsuccessful rounds of IUI too, just with Clomid as I was responding "so well" (you aren't to get more than 3 eggs anyway for IUI), but then we decided we'd have one more go, and we'd give IVF a try. It was a big decision, in the end we decided we'd always wonder if if we didn't. So we had the manditory month of "rest" (from hormones) and were moving forward with IVF, when, out of nowhere, my day 2 hormone showed a big estrogen spike. Which is a deadly indicator of declining ovarian reserve. So we couldn't go ahead.

It's not the end of the world for us, we have a beautiful daughter and we're in process to adopt (we'd always thought 2 biological and one adopted would be really great.) But I still took it hard. And I know it would have been far more difficult if we weren't where we are with kids.

I'm sure I'm older than you, just don't count on being able to take your time on these things. And, 6 tries of IUI is 6 months of trying (if you go back-to-back) and still costs about what IVF does.

Good luck Rose. Kids are the best thing in the world. Certainly worth a little (even a lot of) invasiveness :-)

I have one three IUIs and now 26weeks pregnant. My first IUI ended up in a misscarriage, and the second failed, and bigo at the third one!!!! The fact that you fell pregnant with the second IUI tells you that you are capable of getting pregnant with this method, so I would suggest you stop worrying about the next step and just relax and have positive thoughts about the next IUI. IVF is more intrusive and if you can avoid it, it's better. Try like 3-4 times. I think it is more likely you will get pregnant again.

Thanks all, I see the doctor Saturday so i suppose I will be guided by him. I heare what you are saying "mythoughts" a baby would be worth any amount of trouble and at my age I can't keep giving IUI just one more go.

Hi Try,

I have just done my fourth IUI all with Dr. Ho who I would highly recommend. All mine have been with injectables. At present i am just waiting to see if it's worked and it's driving me crazy

I strongly recommend talking to Dr Ho. I think you probably have a good chance, especially if it worked the second time. He can prescribe Progestorone capsules to take to prevent miscarriage. Good luck!

Rose1234, So sorry to hear of you m/c it's hard and can put you off but i did 5 IUI's and one IVF. My Dr told me right form the start to try 6 IUI's the only reason we did IVF is beacuse i got hypostimulated on the clomid and had too many eggs to do IUI. It was expensive and invasive and it didn't work FOR US but i have PCOS so my situation is different to your but we did two IUI's then the IVF anf it was on the 4th IUI i think i feel pregnant which co-insided with me going on some other meds for the PCOS. Unfortunatly i had a mispregnancy at 9weeks but the fact we could get pregnant was something positive out of the situation. We had a break for a month or two and just tried natually withoutsuccess and then went back to Dr Choy and asked if we could just do moniotoring as funds we VERY LOW and she was happy to do that so did some blood tests and scans and she let us know when we were ovulating and bingo that was it. We now have a lovely 4mth old girl i was 35yrs when i feel pregnant. It's all very hard to know whats right and i understand your need for a baby but your concern for your finacial situation it does put a lot of pressure on you and your partner, it's true in the end every injection and dollar put in is worth it but of course it's easy to feel that when you have a bubs in your arms. Hang in there things seem to be looking better we all understand when trying to get pregnant that a month is a life time. Good luck to you, my thoughts are with you and your partner.

Thanks Perthites, it's great to hear other peoples stories especially when they have such a fantastic outcome. You're right a month can seem an eternity when you're on this ride, at the moment two weeks seems an age while I wait for the result of my final IUI. If not successful we have agreed to start IVF.

Hi Rose,

My friend got lucky on her 6th IUI, the reason she didn't go for IVF is religious belief. Good luck to your IUI, keep positive.
