When to start seeing a fertility doctor?

I have been TTC for six months now, and am starting to get impatient. I know some doctors tell you to wait a whole year before start getting any tests, but I'm in my thirties and I feel like time is running out.

hi magic8

my view is a little skewed because i was among the minority of women who needed much infertility treatment before having a child, but my opinion is, if you think the time has come to seek a professional's opinion, then do.

but do yourself a favour, don't leave the office frustrated. walk in there educated. know how long your cycle is, what days you ovulate, have at least two months of temperatures you can show the doctor. (each morning take your temperature before you get out of bed, when your temperature spikes, it means you are ovulating). write down the days you did have intercourse. because that is what the dr will instruct you to do. as much fun as it is, find out what cervical mucuous is and the days you have it.

if you walk into the office with that information in hand, your request for day 17 and 21 ultrasounds (to see if you have a follicle developing and to see if it was released) and a sperm analysis for your partner is completely reasonable the next logical steps toward achieving a healthy pregnancy.

i know your frustration and GOOD LUCK.

As a general guideline, a couple under age 35 should undergo a fertility evaluation if conception does not occur within a year. Couples over 35 should pursue a fertility evaluation after attempting for six months.

Also generally speaking, the likelihood of becoming pregnant after one month of unprotected intercourse is approximately 25%, increasing to 85-90% after one year.

abitnaive's suggestion of knowing your own body before seeing the doctor is a very good one. A load of "don't knows" to the doctor's questions will waste valuable time.

thanks for all the reply (and mrsl for your PM)!

i've actually been doing all the stuff you're supposed to do - temps, ovulation kits, CM, etc... plus taking chinese herbal medicine for me and red ginseng extract for my hubby, and multi vitamins for both of us.

i have a very regular cycle - never missed a cycle since i started having my periods. the temps look like i'm ovulating normally, and CM looks fine, too. i'm pretty confident that we've timed our BD well for the past six months, and i'm getting tired of the disappointment every month.

if this cycle turns out to be a failure, i think i would really want to go see a doctor now.

abitnaive, you mentioned a day 17 and 21 ultrasonar? i thought you're supposed to go BEFORE ovulation to see if you're ovulating normally? i was planning on going to the doctor around day 11-12 since i normally ovulate on day 13-14. am i supposed to go on day 17 instead?

also, are these tests generally covered by insurance in HK? i would imagine they would be quite expensive without insurance..

sorry, i was referring to my own charming cycle, where ovulation occured (if at all) around day 18. so yes, you are correct, pre and post ovulation. you can also get blood tests that will confirm if ovulation occurred.

you definitely are armed with information, and this is very good and will cut down your frustration.

judging from what you have written, a sperm analysis might be in your best interests right now.

i hope this cycle is successful.

unfortunately, with our insurance, (AIA) none of the tests were covered, it was all out of pocket. there are some other insurance plans that cover infertility testing, though. hope yours is one of them.

all best

yes, going to the ob/gyn on day 2 is advisable. they do all the blood tests and can actually check via ultrasound whether you ovulated or not the previous month.

i agree with abitnaive that your hubby should go for the sperm analysis...we left this a bit late so ended up wasting a few months. we're still trying after about 8 mths of fertility treatment...hope something good happens soon...and yes, it can become frustrating and disappointing.
