Shopping for our first baby!

ORIGINAL POST

Summer sales are on and we would like to make use of this opportunity to get some baby products to welcome our first baby in Oct. We have no idea what to get - just bassinets or cots as well? Which brand to go for? What are the essentials? So far we have bought nothing and are thinking it's time to go shopping (as people have been telling me I won't have the energy to shop around when I get too big). Any suggestions? Your help is much appreciated!

The mst use thing i got was an inflatable bath from Mothercare. We didn't have much room in the bathroom so i put it up on the bench next to the sinck filled it with the shower hose and emptyed it into the sink by utting pressure on the edge of the bath. My baby grew out of that after only a couple of months when we then switched to giving her showers with dad. I had been told by friends that the plastic baths are some times moulded and not comfortable and they can be expensive for only a couple of months usage. The great thing about the infatable bath is that if your travelling in the first coupl of months you can take it with you and of course as it's inflatable its very comfy for bubs.

go easy on toys and fancy clothes : you'll get loads of that as gifts. for clothes, just stock up on the essentials like sleepwear and onesies for the day, although newborns sometimes hate having things pulled over their heads so i bought cheap cotton button down shirts for him to wear for the first few weeks.

check with what the hospital you're delivering at gives away. e.g. i bought 1 bath tub and turns out the hospital gave one free to every newborn!

cot/bassinet/sheets: whatever you plan to have your baby sleeping in.

pram: depends if you're going out alot in the beginning. if not, you can buy that later when you're more aware of what you need/want: big basket? lightweight? easy to close?

infant carseat: safer for newborns

bath essentials like wet wipes/bath lotion/nappies/cotton balls/changing mat or table

steriliser/bottles/pumps

the list is endless...have fun!

The baby shop on Eastern Street hands out free lists (next to the door) of everything you will need - from bibs to sterilising equipment to scratch mitts and bath thermometers. If you buy everything on the list from them, it costs about HK$3,000:

"Ah Chi Baby Necessities" at 38 Eastern Street, Sai Ying Pun. 2559 6730. Buying

Thanks very much for all your good advices. My husband and I went to B2B and Mothercare to check out the prices and products this afternoon, and at the end we bought the following items from Mothercare:

Cot-Bed with mattress

Rock chair

Maclaren Techno XT Buggy

Changing station with tub

Moses Basket with Stand

I bought some sleeping suits and body suits 2 weeks ago when I was in London so we didn't buy any more in HK as everyone's been telling us babies grow way too fast!

Guess the next thing is to get some towels and feeding bottles (I plan on breastfeed so perhaps just one or two is enuf?)and a steralizer and bottle warmer? Is Avent a good brand for bottles and steralizer?

Many thanks again to all Mums!

can't recommend highly enough tigex bath seat (available at B2B) which allows you to bathe your baby hands free from newborn on up to 9 months. It's the BEST thing I invested in.

Hi Chrispy06, I'm having my baby in Oct too. Am currently searching for a steralizer as well. Does anyone have recommendations on good brands? Avent/ Chikko/ any others? And is it a must to buy bottles of the same brand in order to fit the steralizer? Thanks!

Hi Nicher - when is your baby due? Mine is on Oct-17!

Many friends of mine have recommended AVENT but they have not mentioned anything about matching bottles but I guess it makes sense to get the same brand right? Probably better fit?

My friends also prefer the Steam Steralizer to the Microwave one, but they do agree that the microwave one is more convenient for travelling.

Just curious - have you decided which hospital to go to for delivery?

I think everyone has sound advice on what to buy and where to buy but don't be afraid to use a little initiative and modify some of your existing furniture for baby. For example, we have a very large custome made desk in the nursery which we are loathe to throw out or sell so I have turned into a big changing table complete with storage for nappies and toiletries.

I considered buying the baby bath but as my Dad pointed out, I was bathed in the kitchen sink for my first few months and it did me no harm. So bubs will follow tradition and be bathed in our kitchen sink - perfect for me as it is waist height and I don't have to bend over to bathe the little un.

Things we have invested in are a good travel system - car seat/pram for gettinmg about. The cot we have was given to us by friends. Everything else will be bought after the baby shower as my friends have told me not to buy anymore stuff until then.

Hi Chrispy - mine is due on Oct28. We are close!!

I prob will go for HK Sanitorium. And you?

My friend recommends Avent steralizer too (I suppose that's a steam one too?). She doesn't use bottles of the same brand but they still fit ok. I was asking that question coz I observed that some bottles are obviously 'fatter' than others so worried they may not fit well.

Anyway, you are doing a good job in getting everything prepared! I haven't started shopping yet coz people keep warning that friends will give me this and that. Will start looking up a few pieces of furnitures though.

Hi Nicher - we have not decided yet but most likely it's going to be Matilda or Adventis. Our doctor goes to both so we will probably go check out the hospitals and see which one we like.

We are not having a Baby shower but will have a celebration when the baby becomes a month old. So we need to get the basic stuff ourselves. =P

The summer sale is on now, you can shop around while you're not too big and the weather is not too hot!

Happy shopping.
