In very early pregnancy, 5 weeks, and wondering if I need to change from a pre natal vitamin to a pregnancy vitamin. Is it OK as long as you are getting the folic? Or do you need to take a different level once pregnant?

My doctor first told me my woman's one a day vitamins with 400mg of folic acid were fine, but then he switched me to Materna.

Bring your vitamins to your doctor, and see what they say.

i think once u find out you're pregnant u are supposed to have 5milligramsof folic acid - not 400micrograms.

But it's best u check with a doc. My doc gave me folic acid supplements and vitamin supplements separately.

you can take prenatal vitamins while TTC. And for those who are of Caucasian descent (and those in mixed marriages) spina bifida is a concern which is why some people are told to up their folic acid intake.

Verellene -

Spina bifida has the highest occurence amongst those of Gaelic descent. Some studies seem to indicate that it occurs most commonly for women whose ancestors are from the British Isles. (this seems to be the global statistic.) In the US, I remember reading that spina bifida is most common in the Hispanic population, although my facts could be wrong on that. Spina bifida is least commonly seen in children of african descent.

Mixed race marriages, if one of the spouses is Caucausian also has an increased incidence. So some doctors do prescribe an increase in folic acid for those who may be at an increased risk. In HK, a couple of my girlfriends are married to Brits and their doctors have told them to take more folic acid while TTC and during their pregnancy.

the following exerpt is from this website.

what causes spina bifida?

Doctors do not know the exact cause of spina bifida but believe that both genetic and environmental factors are involved. Spina bifida manifesta is most common among babies who are born to women whose ancestors came from the British Isles. It is much less common among babies who are born to women whose ancestors came from Africa.2 Women who have had one child with spina bifida are more likely to have another child with spina bifida.

see? this doesnt state that all caucasians can get it. Just seemed weird. I know that asians babies are more likely to get jaundice. my two daughters had jaundice when born and the youngest was put on lights. I am american not from england. Nonetheless still something we all should look out for.

I didn't mean to imply that all Caucasians get it. i'm sorry if it read that way. Rather that the risk is HIGHER for those who are from the British Isles (or Gaelic, or Caucasian.) With the higher risk, an increase dose of folic acid is a common practice for many people.
