Dear All,
I need to chose a hospital for the birth of my baby in March. The closest hospital to me is Eastern Hospital although I don't know of anyone who has given birth there. Has anyone had any experience of this hospital? There was a thread about a year ago but it didn't really tell me much. Any feedback would be appreciated.
Many thanks

I'll be giving birth at PY Eastern Hospital in about 4 weeks' time so will let you know how it goes! Have been going there for checkups since around 20 weeks, though still combining this with visits to private doctor ocassionally. I've found it to be fine so far - you have to wait about an hour to an hour and a half each time, which I think is pretty standard for public hospitals, but when you actually get to the doctor they are generally very nice, excellent English and though of course rushed, reasonably thorough. I've been quite happy, plus of course it's free ! Good Luck with everything.

Thanks Layla! Good luck with everything and I look forward to hearing from you after the birth of your baby. I think I will make an appointment to see them soon (I'm 18 weeks pregnant). Like you I am seeing a private doctor as well for all the antenatal check ups and scans but don't plan to give birth in a private hospital - It's just going to be too expensive!

Someone I know had their baby at PY.
They had a really complicated delivery, 24 hour labour followed by a c-section. Then baby was sick and had to be in a special crib (can't remember what the situation was) and she wasn't allowed to hold baby.
BUT she said the care was EXCELLENT, and she was pumping breast milk like crazy to be sure baby got breast milk, and they let her lean over the crib to have baby suck from her breast.
Considering her terrible birth experience followed by a sick baby, she had nothing but very positive things to say about PY.
Also, she is a westerner and does not speak Cantonese.
BTW - I go private, and often have to wait 45 minutes or more to see the doctor - so you are not missing out on any great waiting rooms or short waits!

hi amandamoo,
my little girl was born at PY an the end of November - not the smoothest of births as I had been induced (11 days overdue) and 26 hours later ended in emergency c-section. HOWEVER despite this I had such a positive experience at PY - and I was in there 3 days pre-induction too for high BP so stayed a week in total. The nurses were so sweet and kind to me, and the doctor who attended us during the delivery and actually did the c-section too was just fantastic. They were really supportive about breastfeeding and had a lactation consultant sit with me the first two times I tried, and they have nice comfy chairs in the nursery were you can go + feed and a nurse will offer advice or just tell you you're doing ok which is great to hear in those first few days. Even though there is so much talk about over-crowding of public hospitals, I was never in a full ward and one of the nights was only one of two in a 6-bed ward. Definitely get your partner/someone to bring you in nice food of course, but this is such a minor complaint amidst the medical expertise and good care. After 14 hours of labour I said I needed an epidural - the anaesthetist was called and I had it in place within about 15 minutes - they were just fabulous and so patient and informative. Nurses' English excellent too so no worries there. After that week-long stay and c-section my husband went to pay the bill - $HK 650 !! I am so, so glad we went there and would really recommend it. When are you due by the way ? Good Luck with everything, wherever you decide to deliver and let me know if you have any other questions about PY ?

Hi Layla --congratulations on the birth of your little girl! We are planning to deliver at PYNEH, too, so I was really glad to read about your recent experience there. I do have a few questions, though, if you don't mind:
1) Did you have to go to the nursery EVERY time you need to feed the baby?
2) If the baby is "unsettled" in the nursery, will the nurses bring the baby to you, or at least alert you that you need to go there to feed?
3) Will they allow the baby to be with you in the ward, esp. when hubby is there visiting?
4) After your C-section, how soon before you were able to b'feed your baby? Did they bring the baby to you immediately (as you probably could not walk to the nursery yet)?
Thanks, Layla!

Hi,
Could anyone tell me the difference between Queen M H and Pamela Y H ?
EVERY people I know who delivered at PY had a C section ... is it quite by chance or are they keen on c sections like in Mathilda ?
And like Kwis I would like to know if you can keep you baby always with you...
Thanks

Kwis,
No, you don't have to go the nursery to feed every time - or at all in fact, if you don't want to. I just found it more comfy than feeding in the bed. My baby was born just before midnight and I was so exhausted that they kept her in the nursery that first night, but they asked me first - I could barely hold her I was so tired but you certainly could keep your baby if you had a 'normal' delivery - I saw other mums doing that. She was given some formula from a cup the first 20 hours, but again I think if you were in better shape, or asked, you could express milk and that could be given, or you could feed yourself if you had the energy - I didn't.They asked for permission to give her that by the way. So the first time I fed her was maybe 20 hours after birth, when I was feeling 100x better and we did fine - still breastfeeding exclusively now at 11 weeks so no problems. Of course, for a normal delivery I'm sure you could BF from the start. When my visitors + husband came the next evening (4-8 pm each day only) we kept her with us the whole time, and in fact from then on she stayed with me. I'm not sure about them bringing the baby to you for feeding - maybe, though they're of course very busy so your baby would probably be kept waiting, but most mums I saw either kept their babies or just kept popping in to check.
