Hi,
My mom keeps warning me not to drink ice-cold drinks or eat ice-cream - you know even orange juice is always kept in the fridge...
Is it harmful to the baby? and in what ways?
thanks

Did she give a reason or is it some old wives tale?
I ate lots of ice-cream and drank lots of cold drinks during my pregnancy and my baby is perfectly healthy.
But stay away from soft serv ice-creams, according to my friend they might have listeria.

if you're really craving on the ice cream, go ahead with only 3 teaspoons & no more than that, as I know Ice Cream has lots of sugary base which will make pregnant women overweight with High Blood or Pregnancy incurred Diabetes......
Take this reference from Books "What to eat during Pregnancy"

I had massive morning sickness.
the only thing that tasted good was icecream (especially after spilling the guts.)
Cold things are not bad for you. Koreans also believe that eating cold things is not good for the uterus, but given that the stomach and the uterus are separated, there is no cause for concern. (my dad is an OB - told me not to pay any attention to wives tales.)

I am american and my mother in law is chinese. She told me through my 1st and 2nd pregnancy that ice cream was bad. I just laughed and sorta got irritated if she took it away from me. Although, later on in both pregnancies if i ate ice cream the baby would move away from my stomach. Sorta was painful if the baby pushed too far over and it was all tight in on place. Not sure if this has happened to anyone else.
I dont think cold stuff is bad.... its just something they believe in. its the same as when your having your period not supposed to drink or eat suger, watermelon, ice cream or anything cold. I think a man made this up to torture his wife.... hahaha

From the nutrition point of view is OK to take cold foods. More of importance is to avoid the raw foods as it has higher risk of E.Coli, listeria or samonella.
There was a recent report of presence of E. Coli in salad spinach. Also listeria was found in icecream many years ago.
