Post-Natal Care Home Visit feedback

Can anyone give me feedback on post-natal care provided by Yvonne Heavyside or Annerley Midwives? I am a first time mother and feel that having someone for 5 to 10 visits will give me the confidence and assurance to look after my newborn. Thanks

Hi,

I was in the same situation 1 year ago, and I decided to sign up with Annerley Midwives for 5 visits. They have several midwives. I would highly recommend Hilda. She is very busy though, but you can ask them if she can be your midwive. I thought she was great. My baby was born very healthy and we didn't have much problems, although I did find breastfeeding a bit difficult at the beginning. Hilda checked the baby (weight gain, height, etc.), and she was very-very helpful with breastfeeding. They come for around 45 minutes (or longer if you need). And it made me feel much better. In UK it is a routine practice, and I think it is a very good idea.

fab experience with Hulda. I had a latch problem, and was bfeeding with massive pain - in less than 30 seconds of watching me feed, she figured out the problem and immediately afterwards, no pain. It was phenomenal. Helped me with the first bath, gave me some pointers on feeding, checked my stitches, and was just a wonderful reassuring presence. Can't recommend Hulda at Annerly enough.

I'll third Hulda's rave reviews. I ended out having two blocks of visits, for a total of 12 as I remember. Absolutely fabulous. So helpful and so reassuring. Those early days were often overwhelming, our little one was was a pretty unsettled newborn. And with no family in the area, having Hulda on-call was a godsend.

We used Louise from Annerley and love her - she is patient and friendly and always positive.

You are very very smart getting home visits- they are beyond wonderful.

Your OBGYN checks your uterus in contracting and your stitches are healing.

Your PEDIATRICIAN checks the baby.

Only YOUR MIDWIFE checks YOU!!

I think it is a good idea to try to talk to or meet a few midwives before you have the baby to see who you 'click' with.

I used Yvonne - I had about 5 visits although probably only needed 2 or 3. I found her most helpful when it came to massaging the lumps out of my breasts. The last couple of visits were spent mainly gossiping as there wasn't much left to do after weighing and measuring the baby. I have heard though that Mrs Chee is much better when it comes to breastfeeding issues eg positioning. The reason I didn't get Mrs Chee was that having met her I thought she was a bit too direct, not warm and fluffy enough for this first time mother. If I have another child I will be using Mrs Chee as the warm and fluffy stuff is not so important once you know basically what to expect...

I used Yvonne Heavyside for both my children (now 2.5 and 8 months) and I can't recommend her highly enough. You'd be surprised how much you need help, even as a second time Mum. First time round I had every breastfeeding problem imaginable and Yvonne sorted them all out (including spotting mastitis just as it was beginning and saving me several days of hell). Second time round breastfeeding was a breeze but my little boy had very severe reflux and vomited for England. Yvonne is extremely knowledgeable about reflux and many other medical conditions (no doubt because she is a qualified nurse as well as health visitor and lactation consultant). I understand that some "lactation consultants" have no medical training whatsoever. Yvonne also works very closely with our paediatrician, Dr Thondup, which was particularly useful for our son's medical problems. She is never too busy to talk and will answer even the most inane questions with sensitivity and patience.

I can wholeheartedly recommend Yvonne Heavyside and I am probably fighting for the title of “number one fan” with at least five other girlfriends who have had the privilege of her services. Yvonne is there for you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week without fail, no matter how serious or trivial the matter, and whether it is for you or the baby and invariably stays longer than one hour . She never makes you feel rushed or hassled. I do not know what I would have done without her when I became a first time mum nearly 2½ years ago – my little girl was born with dislocated hips and Yvonne was so supportive, patient and encouraging. She still comes to see me every month to weigh and measure my little girl, give me tips and pointers and generally catch up on my daughter’s progress. Yvonne has vast experience and instantly puts your mind at ease. She becomes your best friend and more. I am pregnant again and will be signing up for at least 10 visits next year when the baby is born!

I used Mrs Chee to help me with horribly engorged breasts.

She really helped me, she massaged my breasts for more than 1 hour : it was horribly painful (not her fault) but at the end, everything was so much better !

I had the same feeling as Blintiz about her : she knows her stuff but she's very direct and not very warm I found.
