Usually it's included in the vitamin complex for pregnant women. However if you want to take it separately, try GNC brand. It's available in most Mennings. You should take at least 400mcg every day.

you can also ask your doctor for Materna multi-vit with folic acid.

depends on how far along you are in your pregnancy..

My doctor recommends at least 600 mcg daily and says that you can't overdo it. If you're in early stages, I heard that Materna has vit A which isn't recommended for early stages (not sure if this is true), so I'm been taking Pregnacare plus an extra 400mcg folic acid table.

You should start with 400mcg a day before you get pregnant and continue with that level for at least the first trimester.

i found materna aggravated a strange metallic taste in my mouth. I took 500mcg pills of folic acid during the first trimester (more cos this was the dosage in which the pills were available). Once past the first trimester the doc will let you cut down on the dose. You can ask him to prescribe you the pills.

Rio,
It is my understanding that how much folic acid you need is dependent on: whether you are pregnant with twins, just had a child, etc. But at the very least you should take 400mcg - as suggested by Claire - throughout your pregnancy. Having said that, it is most important to take folic acid in the first trimester - because it is to help reduce the change of spinal cord defect which is formed in the first trimester. Most gyn will give you some folic acid when you go for your checkups.
Not sure if you can get folic acid over the counter in HK.

You can get folic acid tablets easily here. Just go to Watson's or Mannings or GNC or any similar shop. It's just a supplement. BTW, I don't like leafy greens, so have been told to continue taking them throughout my prenancy- otherwise, it should hopefully be covered in your diet for your second and third trimesters. As Havefaith says, it's most important in your first trimester.

Simplythebest,
Yes - ofcourse - should start taking folic acid when you are TTC just in case. I have been on folic acid for the last year - but you are absolutely right.
