Pap smear when pregnant

ORIGINAL POST

I had a LEEP procedure done 11 mths ago to remove CIN3. I took a while to get over it, then had a nasty virus (unrelated) for about 2 months, so basically the body was pretty hammered over a 5 mth period. My GYN said he would wait and do the follow up pap smear at 6 mths, however I got pregnant (am now 6 mths)- SO am yet to have the follow up smear. I guess two questions:

Are pap smears OK during pregnancy?

I thought they were, however he says he will not preform one despite saying my cervix looks fine - i.e length etc.

Has anyone had a LEEP and pap smears done throughout pregnancy? If so, which doc.

I am constantly thinking of it, and feel I just need a pap for piece of mind! If it is a bad result then talk about options I guess, however I am not willing to wait another 4.5 mth (post natal check up) to have the test

Any advice, anyone??

They say no risk of miscarriage but a risk of spotting.

But they don't like to do it during pregnancy : our cells are modified because of the hormonal changes so they can't have a accurate diagnostic. You could have a look on the internet I'm sure you'll find some information about it.

good luck

I wouldn't do a pap smear during the pregnancy and my doctor wouldn't either. I had a few abnormal cells after pregnancy but they did revert to normal after a year or so.

My doctor did say that the cells there are very slow growing and could take years to develop into something even more serious than a CIN3.

The most probably thing is that he may recommend you to have a C-Section so not to expose your baby during childbirth to any abnormal cells, if any.

I know many women who have had abnormal smears after childbirth so do not be surprised if that is also the case again with you.

Maybe try to speak to your doc for some more info and options.

THanks guys,

Just really scared that the growth may have accelerated during the pregnancy given the hormonal changes etc.

Will quizz my OB next visit.

Anyone actually had Pap smears when pregnant. On the internet it says that they are during pregnancy....actually said quite often to be good GYN practice....mmmm?!?

i had a papsmear when i was 6 weeks preggy with #1. i had some bleeding so the doctor had a look at my cervix. the bogus doctor actually said that my cervix looked "bad" and did a papsmear for me which turned out to be normal. when i go to a second doctor for a second opinion, he told me that this is called cervical erosion and it is common in pregnancy.

I had a smear when I was 11 weeks pregnant as I had not had one for a few years (yes I know thats terrible but with moving from one country to another it was something I had forgotten about!) and everything was fine. My dr was Dr Dawkins who us FANTASTIC so I trusted everything he did!

Just to add, I did ask my doc about hormonal changes in pregnancy affecting the cells and accelerating growth. He said it wouldn't as it is a virus, but then I was not really a CIN1 even.

Go ask your doc has to be the best option.
