Should I be worried?

Hello gals... (and maybe the odd guy that's reading this section)

I'm new to this website but found it very interesting and helpful, so I'm hoping that someone may give me some advice.

I was on the pill for 3 years and have stopped taking it about 10 months ago because of the side effects (moodiness, headaches, weightgain, loss in libido etc etc). On top of that I have stopped having my periods about 1 year ago.

I just turned 26 and my husband and I have been married 2.5 years and hope to have a family soon. I have done blood tests etc and everything is apparently normal (although I struggle to understand how my situation is normal). The family doctor says that maybe I'm not ovulating but has not recommended any drugs/treatment to correct it.

Should I be worried about being able to have children? Should I maybe try some Chinese medicine?

Hi, Obviously it is better to seek for professional advise (I don't know your family doctor's speciality). Menstruation cycle could be effected by many factor like stress, environmantal change etc. Before you think too much I think you better see gynae. If you don't have any problem for medical reason, I would suggest you to do some YOGA, some exercise to warm up your body, good balanced diet especially to enhance woman hormone, recommended to eat food contains lots of isoflavone like Soy staff and good massage to relax...well that's how I got pregnant...

Hi helsinki,

I am not a fertility expert but i can just tell you that in HK, most family doctors deal only with common colds etc. Many people i know have seen a doc here with something other than 'common' and have been fobbed off with no clear diagnosis and told that everything was normal. After a few years here, i have realised that i have to go to a specialist for different things. I would not go with the family doctor's opinion, definitely schedule yourself an appointment with an ob/gyn.

In regards to Chinese medicine, i think it may help but combining Chinese medicine and western medicine is not a good idea. You will need to be monitored if you do this. But my mother used to boil me Chinese herbs to regulate my periods when i was young as i was anaemic and that definitely worked for me.

I am trying to get pregnant now and my doc put me on Metformin and i believe this will help regulate your periods and induce ovulation. She is giving me these tablets as she says i have PCOS but i know other docs provide these tablets in cases such as yours. I would speak to a gyn/ob about what your options are but i would not be content with being told that this situation was normal if i was trying for a baby. Best of luck though and lots of baby dust for you!

Hi, I think Babeez's advice is all good - I would just add that you might want to see an ob/gyn who specializes in fertility. Because you are so young, some doctors may just want you to wait it out and not take it seriously. Not having a period for a year definitely needs looking into. Also, an obgyn will be able to tell you whether you are ovulating based on blood tests and ultrasound scans.

Thanks girls... these are all great suggestions and definitely gives me stuff to watch out/ask for when I go back to the doctors... the family doctor is just a GP, so I really should ask for a referral to a specialist (except I've had such BAD experience with four surgeons for different things in the last 5 years, the very thought of going to another specialist terrifies me).

I think I am taking things for granted too because I'm only 26, and we haven't really started trying for a baby yet. So I keep telling myself at the back of my mind that everything will work out.

My husband and I are living in Melbourne at the moment but we're moving back to Beijing in a few months' time. So I'm also concerned that if I need fertility treatment, I won't be able to find a good English speaking doctor in Beijing (Chinese hospitals are awful!).

I guess I really should look into it seriously now.

Sometimes, it takes a long time to figure out what's wrong. Also, it may take a few doctors for you to find one that's good for you, so the sooner you start, the sooner you can start addressing the cause of your anovulation. You are still young, so take advantage of your youth now. Fertility starts declining quickly for women, especially in their 30s.

hi babeez,

Did you still taking metformin pills ?

How long had you been taking it ?

I feels so awful and taste metallic yuck !! feels vomit but can't and always dizzy and looking forward with orange juices; why ?

I am PCO/S with no period without progesterone pills and clomid, do you also like that ?

Or

You only take metformin to regulate menses ?

Anxious
