HI
Yes they are extremely good in that! Amazing because they love to tell you what to do and what to not do when you pregnant but when it comes to giving up a seat for somebody pregnant then all good intensions seems to disappear. I just gave birth but worked untill my 38th week and I often had to ask somebody to get up. And I also had to travel from Hang Hau to Wanchai, so not a very short distance.
Strangely I once had a pregnant women (who was just a bit smaller then me) getting up to give me her seat while the others next to her (young people) just looked like they had no clue what they just (not) did! Amazing
Frustrating I can tell you but luckily you will not need to worry about that soon anymore ;-)
Good luck!

I'm 7 months pregnant and sometimes I get offered a seat and sometimes they just look away even when my belly is sticking right in front of their face! True that some are embarassed so they just don't bother. But sadly often people in HK are just plain selfish...I mean it's so obvious that we need to sit down. Sometimes you can stare them in the face and hope they would get the message but they don't! I come to the point where if I want to sit down and nobody offers I won't be shy to ask a young person, I mean shame on them for not offering. I no longer question "what are these people thinking!!" I just go ahead and ask for a seat...less stress for me. What's the use of waiting and wondering? It's the education/culture...cutting into lines, rudeness etc etc.

When I was pregnant and showing, I got offered a seat MOST of the time.
But things are different with a toddler, they wouldn't give up their seats. There have been a number of times when my little toddler would fall asleep (after a long day out) and nobody would offer me a seat. Imagine standing for 50 minutes carrying a sleeping toddler who weighs 14kg!!!

I'm nearly 6 months and I've not been offered a seat once. Normally they look at me and then close their eyes and pretend to go to sleep! To be honest I'm too embarrassed to ask anyone for their seat! Maybe I need to get a bit more vocal. Or maybe I need to start wearing those maternity dresses with the bow ties at the back so that there's no misunderstanding on whether or not I'm pregnant!!!!
How about those that charge onto the train when you're trying to get off. This is my biggest pet hate!!!

buz, interesting thing is that my Chinese colleagues told me to stop wearing t-shirts and pants. They said that nobody will offer me a seat in public transport unless I wear a maternity dress... Strange logic.
Anyway, I avoid MTR and packed buses. I spent a fortune on taxis over the last 2-3 months. I just feel silly standing with a big belly. Luckily, another 2-3 weeks to go!

I used to point to the disabled/elderly sign on the MTR and ask the (able bodied) person to stand up - worked every time - I think you embarrass them into it. If the person was sleeping I'd wake them up! But then again I was a hormonal b*tch from hell and didn't care who I offended!

Pregnant twice in HK, and I've noticed people tend to offer their seats in the MTR more than in the bus where because of the layout they cannot really pretend they didn't see you... But most people will just close their eyes and pretend to sleep. I usually ask but even at 8 months pregnant some people would look at me with a 'why ?' look on their face... So I just point at my tummy in case they haven't noticed and they would reluctantly give up their seat.
I know sometimes carry around 2 toddlers in public transportation in HK and I don't always get a seat either...
I hate the subway in Paris, noisy, dirty, packed and hot, but I was amazed to see 4 people offering me their seat when I spent 1 week there as I was 6 months pregnant !

In her 8 months of pregnancy my wife, who uses KCR, MTR and buses every day has been offered a seat just 3 times in total. That is the reality here!
