paternity testing

Hi there,

I am seeking advice on paternity testing in HK. A woman I spent the night with is pregnant and is unsure of who the father is. As you can imagine this is unsettling for both of us and I am wondering if any one can provide me any information. I need to know if it is possible to have such a test before the child is born (she is 9 weeks pregnant). Also, if it is possible, where it can be done in Hong Kong.

Any advice you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

hi anon~

there are two prenatal tests that can be performed that could establish paternity. both can be done and are commonly done in hong kong.

Amniocentesis: This test is performed anywhere from the 14th-24th weeks of pregnancy. The doctor guides a thin needle into the uterus, through the abdomen. The needle draws out a small amount of amniotic fluid, which is tested. Risks include a small chance of harming the baby and miscarriage. Other side effects may include cramping, leaking amniotic fluid, and vaginal bleeding.

Chrionic Villus Sampling (CVS): This test consists of a thin needle or tube which a doctor inserts from the vagina, through the cervix, guided by an ultrasound, to obtain chrionic villi (tissue attached to wall of the uterus.) The chrionic villi and the fetus come from the same fertilized egg, and have the same genetic makeup. This testing can be done earlier in pregnancy from the 10th-13th weeks.

there is a lot more information online. good luck to both of you.

Try Dr. Macor Wan of the HK Prenatal Diagnostics Centre. He can perform the above 2 tests for check for birth defects. His clinic is in St. Georges Blding in Central.
