Hello, I am 16 weeks pregnant and due February 3rd with my first. My husband and I will be relocating to Hong Kong for his business; sometime in November this year (2007). I have the opportunity to choose to have the baby in Hong Kong or in San Francisco, CA., USA, where we live now. Of course after the baby is born I would join my husband in HK. My husband will be with me for the birth, since we will have a planned C-Section due to my medical history. But he will have to commute from HK and spend only half the time with me since his job will be starting in Nov. and I will be in the US. Below is some other info to give you about my situation. Thank you for any advice or suggestions!
1. Have a thyroid condition for at least 7 years and see an endocronologist regularly, especially during my pregnancy.
2. My OB has authorized a planned C-Section due to medical history.
3. Our insurance will cover private Hospital care.
4. I do not have domestic help here in the US, but will have family that lives at least 2 hours away that will come to visit periodically. My husband will be with me half the time before the birth and after since he will be working in Hong Kong.
5. In HK, I will have domestic help and my husband and I will be together but no family or friends. Will have to depend on this site and mommy to be group. Also interested in staffing a midwife after the birth to help with me healing.
Again, thanks for any suggestions on patient care, bed side manners, hospital staff, doctors. I am planning a trip with my husband next week Aug 23- Sept 1) to look at neighborhoods, visit hospitals, interview doctors to help with my desicion.

hi first of all congratulations, to answer some of your questions, do you know whether you will be living on the kowloon side or the hong kong side? There are a couple of good private hospitals on both side of HK. You should'nt be too worried about having a baby in HK, if that is what you decided to do, most of the hospital staff and doctors of the private hospitals are very good. Anyway in the meantime, take of yourself and the baby, which is the most important thing.

Hi, my wife is currently about 7 month pregnant and she is being looked after by Dr Joe chan.
Initially, I was a bit reluctant for my wife to see a male OB. Dr Chan was actually introduced by my friend who used Dr Chan previously. After the first visit, we both feel comfortable with him. We have been seeing him for the past month, and we both found him to have a fantastic bedside manner. Dr Chan is very good and caring. He is knowledgable and professional. He is also very good in explaining things with drawings and models. His machine is also excellent with all the large Screen and 3D/4D equipement. We will definitely use him for the delivery.
I highly recommend Dr Joe Chan to you. I am sure that he will not disappoint you. His no. is 25233328.

Hello Winter9, Not sure what side we will be living at. We will hopefully explore that next week on our trip to HK with relocation agents. Once I find more info on our destination I will post the info, since I'm sure I will have additional questions. Sending a big thank you!
Greetings Daddy:
Thank you for the Dr Chan's info and tele number. I have read some other threads and his name came up. Hopefully, I can schedule a visit with him during my visit next week to meet him. Again, thanks everyone for all your replies and sugestions!

A good friend of mine came out here about 10 years ago and said she will go back to the US to have kids - because she did not trust the health system here. After having her first here, she decided she was not going to have kids anywhere but Hong Kong. She ended up having all three of her children here at Matilda. It will be expensive but if you are covered for it - then do go for the 5star hotel treatment.
I dont think you can go wrong with the doctors that have been recommended to you on this forum.
