Vitamins during pregnancy

ORIGINAL POST

Hi

Good day to all of you.

Not sure if this has been already posted in this thread.

My wife is 4.5 month pregnant and until now doctor has not given her any vitamins, folic acid, iron pills etc etc.

We heard that many of the doctors have given these vitamins to other pregnant women. Now my wife is worried if she has to ask the doctor to prescribe these vitamins ?

Can you please advise if its better to take vitamins during pregnancy even if not prescribed by the doctor yet.

Thanks

hi, yes, take vitamins for sure, folic acid normally is only till 3 mnths I think, but otherwise over the counter pregnancy vitamins of any leading brand like Centrum etc. I was pregnant in UK (not here) and the doc there just says to buy any of the bid brand ones, nothing special that you need prescription for.

Just buy prenatal vitamins, like Materna. I heard that other prenatal vitamins like Centrum are not suited for pregnant women because they have high doses of Vitamin A, which may cause birth defects.

Materna has sufficent folic acid and iron, etc. so you probably won't need supplements. Except maybe calcium.

I am talking about the pregnancy vitams that Centrum make, not the multivitamins

Folic Acid is often given in the first few months of pregnancy but is of little value later. Iron may be given if iron deficiency exists (or if there is a risk).

Normally vitamins are not prescribed routinely.

my doctor prescribed materna for all 3 of my pregnancies. i strongly advice you to take them too, you can just find it in watson's or manning. i also take calcium at the end of my pregnancy because of frequent leg cramps that i had. at 5 month, i started taking mumomega to help with the brain development of the baby. these are optional, but materna is the important one that you should take.

Hi

Good evening to all of you.

Thanks for your valuable suggestions.

Just like to ask you one more thing. Is there any telephone helpline in HK providing guidance related to pregnancy because it is not practicle to go to see the doctor for each and every single problem.

Besides, government hospital doctors are very reluctant to provide any additional infomation to non chinese speakers.

My wife is now 6m pregnant.

Thanks for your attention.

GNC PreNatal work. They come with or without iron. Also fish body oil is good for fetal brain development.

I am a week pregnant and because of a twisted ankle was given three pills of valium a day, is that safe? Will it harm the baby?

"I am a week pregnant and because of a twisted ankle was given three pills of valium a day, is that safe? Will it harm the baby?"

Stop taking them right now and call your doctor before taking any more!

The only "safe" painkiller that I know of during pregnancy is Tylenol or other acetaminophen (AKA paracetamol) otc drug. You should avoid aspirin. It's a good idea to avoid painkillers as much as possible. Talk to your doctor.

From the Valium website: "Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding. If you become pregnant while taking diazepam, call your doctor immediately."

Also you're not a week pregnant. The first day of your last period is the official start of your pregnancy. If you know you're pregnant you're at least 3 weeks in.

My crazy doctor told me to take valium as it is safe and also gave me some panadols as painkillers? I took three valium, two anti inflammatory and one tablet to keep my stomach normal and two panadols! Is Panadol harmful as well?

Panadol (paracetamol) is completely safe to take when pregnant so long as you follow the directions on the pack.

Valium (or diazepam), is typically proscribed for a short amount of time, as it is severely addictive. Valium comes from a family of medicines known as benzodiazepines. Several studies have been conducted that indicate that benzodiazepines may lead to an increased risk of birth defects.

You should speak to another doctor immediately to discuss an alternate form of treatment for your ankle. I would definitely stop taking the valium (but I am not a doctor, of course).

Sorry about posting twice, something wrong with my computer - kept telling me error blah blah blah!

Oh, forgot to say to take all the meds you were given to the other doctor when you visit. He will probably put them all in the bin (it's happened to me before!). I would take the panadol for now and that's it til you get some further advice!

I have already taken two doses so far and have stopped now. I am really mad at this dr because he didn't tell me it was unsafe esp after I clearly told him I am pregnant. I called him and he again and he said it is safe even when the site says it is not! I called up the pharmacist and she said it is unsafe and the gyna says the worst will be that ppl have a miscarriage though chances are slim. I am really scared now. I have generally been really disappointed with the doctors in HK so far they put on phony accents and airs and seem to know inadequate info. This is not the first time I have had such a problem. And he sits at the Canossa Hospital! It makes me scared.

"Unsafe" is a pretty blunt term. It's not a clear thing. Just because you took them doesn't mean there will be defects. In fact it is quite likely. But he should have warned you that some studies show there may be an increased risk, and given you options.

I am not very trusting of the doctors here. I received a bag af about 7 different little pouches of pills when I attended yesterday. I came home and looked them all up on the Net. Out of those 7 I am taking three. The others I don't need as they are covered in my pregnancy vitamin already and the other I have no idea what it is for sure and I ead one site that said it shouldn't be taken if pregnant. I know it is in th eiron categary but not sure what the deal is so giving it a wide berth. I know it is just to help the doctor's bank account rather than of being necessary for me to take.

Ask him about it and don't let him off the hook until you get a straight answer. A US doctor pulling that sort of thing would find himself without patients right quick.

In most good clinics and hospitals in the US there are even signs stating that patients have a right to know about their treatment and doctors are obliged to discuss options and answer questions. Doctors overexplain things and it can sometimes get a bit tedious. But you never feel like you get no information. Even our dentist would take a minute or two after each visit talking about what he had done, how our teeth will probably behave until the next visit, how we should care for them, when to call him. All without hawking any product apart from the complimentary toothbrush with his name on it.

Well anything that has increased risk is unsafe to me axptguy perhaps your definition is different...I am becoming careful of some medical practitioners here.

I was taking a pre natal which included folate of 800mcg, is it risky to take an additional folic acid pill of 400mcg with that pre natal? That would make my total folate upto 1200 mcg.

Whoops mine came on the message board three times! Something is wrong here.

"the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that women consume no more than 1,000 micrograms of synthetic folic acid a day" http://www.marchofdimes.com/pnhec/173_769.asp

I wouldn't be taking another dose of folic acid (folate, B9 same thing). I was given more in the form of pill called uni-folic, which will remain untouched.

Nono. I think we're perfectly in sync and agree with you 100%. I just didn't want to seem like more of a know-it-all than usual. ;)

As li'lbean says the prenatal should be fine.

Just make sure you take fish oils as well. These are good for fetal brain development. GNC has "Fish Body Oil 1000" or the even more complete "Fish Body Oils with GLA".

Thanks everyone! Generally, does anyone know which trimester is the worst? For some I know it is the first because of the sickness but I wonder if the third is tough with all the weight, tension of labor, slow walk/movement, sluggishness?

Please support our advertisers:

Typically:

- First - morning sickness.

- Second - easy peasy.

- Third - oh my god I'm huge, my feet are huge (not that I can see them) I'm swollen, I need to pee all the time, get it out now!

Your results may vary but in my experience as an observer the third trimester is way worse than anything else. Good thing too, because it makes you WANT to go into labor.

There's no need to walk slowly. You can avoid the waddle if you want to do so. My wife was racing around at her usual speed right up until she went into labor, at which point the hospital staff insisted on putting her in a wheelchair despite her protests.

Haha! Did she avoid bending down at all? Did her doctor advise her not to bend to pick anything at any point or avoid straining herself in any way at any point?

Don't stress too much purefit. I have a friend who's 8 months pregnant and is still bending over to pick up after her almost 2-year old son (although somewhat awkwardly). She doesn't have a care in the world, other than the basics - eating right etc. She was practicing yoga for pregnant women off a DVD for a while (then maybe ran out of time / enthusiasm? - I don't know). She still takes her son to the park and plays all worts of games. Her pregnancy seems to be progressing without a problem. I hope this help alleviate your fears.

Agree with li'lbean (my your nick is hard to type fast). It is my unscientific observation that women with lots of pregnancy "issues" tend to be the ones who worry and fret a lot anyway. It's easy to find things to worry and complain about if you keep looking for them.

You're pregnant, not sick. Nature created you to keep moving and doing stuff. Try to live your normal life (well, plus all those extra bathroom trips) but don't strain yourself too much.
