hospital bookings

I hate to bring up this issue again but I'm confused and hope someone can clarify things for me. I had a frozen embryo transfer 4 weeks ago today and have just found out we're expecting twins. Yay!

However, I've now been told I need to decide on hospitals this week and make a booking or they'll be full! They'd make the booking for my due date but I'm thinking that as it's twins I'll probably end up having a c-section before the due date. Also, we've been told we need to pay quite a large deposit so it's not as if we can make the booking just in case we need it. Therefore, how can I go about booking a private hospital when I've no real idea of whether I'll be carrying to full term? The Doctor told me to register with the Queen Mary as well as a private hospital because they'll see me if I go into labour any time from 32 weeks (which the private hospitals wouldn't). I'm sure the Queen Mary is fine, but having paid top dollar for health insurance for the past 2 years this isn't what I was expecting to have to do. Also, seeing as they'll be our first babies I'm a bit concerned about language difficulties at the Queen Mary. I'll need to be able to ask questions and know what's going on!

Anyone else been pregnant with multiples and been in a similar situation? What to do?!

Hi Kikidee - that is great news about the twins, many congratulations!!

I am in the same situation, expecting twins sometime in April next year. My Dr has booked me into Matilda for my due date - when I asked how this works, he said I will get a room because I have a 'confirmed booking' and the date is just an indication... Matilda does not seem to ask for a deposit, I know Adventist does (and in case they cannot accommodate you, you lose 10% of the HK$20k deposit)

However, delivering in Matilda (or any private hospital) is only an option after 35 weeks - before that I would go to Queen Mary. Dr said I do not have to register or make an appointment with them in advance.... contradictory to what your Dr said? I'll check again this week, will pm you.

A friend of mine had her twins very early and ended up in Queen Mary, with babies in NICU for quite some time. She highly recommends the Queen Mary, apparently it is one of the top 3 NICU's in the world - some people even suggest delivering there no matter what because other hospitals do not have the same equipment in case something goes wrong during delivery. You can actually get a private room in the Queen Mary as well!

Sorry don't have any real advice but have tried not to worry about it - I'm sure at least one hospital will accept me if I am having twins... ;-} Will let you know if I get any further 'directions'

take care

Hi Lena HK - thanks! I may have gotten it wrong about registering with the Queen Mary. Rather a lot is getting lost in translation, hence the confusion. I have another appointment just before Christmas so I'll try and get some clarification then. I've put my name down for the Canossa so that I can deliver with the same Doctor I've been seeing since TTC but I'm now wondering if it's worth it. As you say, if the little ones are in any difficulty they'll need to be at the Queen Mary anyway. Just out of interest, have you been given the option of a natural delivery or have you been pushed towards a c-section? My Dr says that c-section is best for twins so that the second twin doesn't risk being starved of oxygen after the first one is born.... but I'm sure I've heard of women delivering twins naturally without any problems. It seems ridiculous for me to be worrying about such things when I'm only 6 weeks pregnant, but of course I need to prepare for the costs. Annoyingly my health insurance has started putting a cap on maternity claims so by the time I deliver I won't be fully covered.

All the best!

Just to let you know that there will be English-speaking personnel to attend to you at any times in QM. At least that was happened to me.

Congratulations Kikidee. Whilst I'm not having twins but due my first baby mid next year, I too am going through the same dilemma. I've just shed out 20K deposit to my doc for delivery package (other 20K due next year). Now this hospital booking system is a real pain and I really didnt want to have to worry about this kind of thing so early. My doc has waitlisted me to Matilda, Adventist and I've received confirmation from adventist on condition of paying a deposit. I had not been told about losing 10% if they cannot accommodate me!! - this is ridiculous to say the least). I have not made the payment yet but could anyone tell me if I turn this booking down, will I get one somewhere else. I really dont want to think about this (or pay this money now) before I leave next week for christmas vacation. Would appreciate any advice on this whole money scam thing with docs and hospitals soon as I'm seeing my doc later this week and may need to make a decision.

It's not a money scam thing, they are trying to balance it all out. One of the problems with the current system is that people are making bookings with 3 or 4 hospitals and are blocking others out, which is why they are starting to introduce deposits to prevent this from happening.

Try and make sure that your Doc is completely clear on what you want and you are clear in what he/she is telling you. If you have to go public do not worry, English will not be a problem or will the care received.

hi kikidee

congratulations on your pregnancy!

if you would like feedback on delivering at queen mary, or any other hospital in hong kong, i suggest you contact the hong kong mothers of multiples association, or become a member and attend one of our meetings.

i know mothers of multiples who have delivered at the matilda, queen mary and adventist! there are members who have delivered vaginally and members who have delivered via c-section.

Thanks for all the replies. I've been quiet for a while as I've been feeling very tired and a bit sick. It could be a lot worse though so I'm counting my blessings! cbdc - thanks for the suggestions and feedback. I'm going to hold off doing anything more until the detailed scan is over and done with. I'm a bit superstitious about joining groups and stuff when I'm still so early on. I'm not terribly happy about having to book the hospital at this early stage but I guess there's no real choice. I'll probably send you a PM in the new year enquiring about your Queen Mary experience!

I'm also seeing another doctor this week to get a second opinion about natural vs c-section delivery.

Lena HK - my Doctor said it's not compulsory to register with the Queen Mary but he likes to send his patients there with a letter to 'register' so that at least the hospital is aware of the patient, their details, background etc. and the approximate dates they'd be needing the hospital's services.

All the best!

I'm a bit confused. Queen Mary said in order to give birth there, I would need to receive antenatal care from them (not a private doctor). I didn't realize just "registering" (and not receiving antenatal care from there or Tsank Yuk was an option). That was certainly not what they told me on my last visit. So despite having a private ob/gyn, I had to book an appointment with Queen Mary and Tsan Yuk (for diagnostic testing).

So far I've been totally relying on the information given to me by my Doctor. He's private and delivers at the Canossa.... so if you've been told something different with regards to care in public hospitals by the Queen Mary then that's probably more reliable. However, it does seem a bit strange to insist on the public sector diagnostic testing. I would have thought it's enough to take with you any test results you've had done privately to the Public Hospital. Also, in my case, my intentions are to have private ante-natal care and private hospital care... but if I go into labour too early (a possibility with multiple births) the private hospitals won't accept me and I'll go to a public hospital. If what you say is true then I'd be in a silly situation of needing to go for two sets of ante-natal appointments just in case - one private and one public. Also, I've heard of many people having private ante-natal care and then going on to deliver at a public hospital to keep the costs down. They never said that they had to have ante-natal checks at the public hospital as well. Perhaps there's been a change in policy?
