I just had a baby at the end of September, and my "nanny" was amazing. My parents are back in the States, and my mother-in-law isn't really much help, so she hired this nanny for me. She was really excellent - has a great rapport with people, cooks decent Chinese food and knows all the remedies and typical confinement foods. I learned so much from her in how to take care of my baby, and she was a huge support while I was battling the baby blues. She'll also do light housework if you need it. However, she only speaks Cantonese. Send me a PM if you're still interested, and I'll pass on her name and number.

purefit,

I'd never heard of confinement until I got here. I did it because I figured there's no harm in following the regime.

In Chinese tradition, the mother goes through a month of confinement after such a drastic experience that her body's gone through. This confinement entails eating lots of replenishing Chinese medicinal soups and remedies and taking care of herself. During this month, she eats, sleeps and nurses the baby. She's not allowed to eat anything cold or raw, and even certain foods that have a "cool" nature are not advisable at this time. This also means that she should not shower or wash her hair without using boiled ginger or lemon grass water. The logic is that using cold or "dirty" water will let "wind" enter the body, which causes headaches and overall body aches later on in life. In the old days when things weren't so sanitary, some of these practices made sense. Now, a lot of it is just backwards thinking.

Confinement foods include pigs feet stewed in vinegar and ginger, double boiled soups, red date tea, bird's nest, worm grass, and lots of chicken with ginger and glutinous rice wine. Western doctors recommend not loading up on ginger until all of the wounds have healed (episiotomy or c-section).

Many Chinese women swear by it and claim that because they did confinement, they're more healthy in their old age than their western counterparts.

Confinement was a actually common practice in Europe until probably the late 19th century.

"I just had a baby at the end of September, and my "nanny" was amazing."

In the US and Europe, this person is typically known as a Doula.

That is very interesting. So they are not supposed to step out of the house for a month at all? Can they eat lot of cooked vege dishes but no raw veggies? No exercise and lot of bed rest or they should be active around the house?

"No exercise and lot of bed rest"

Doubt it. It's a very bad idea to just lie in bed and not exercise unless you had a c-section or something. It will prolong "recovery".
