I am suffering from low thyroid according to my blood test. I am really upset as I am close to being twelve weeks pregnant and afraid for my child. I have also been pretty depressed during my pregnancy and get really bad bouts of anger. Even prior to pregnancy I suffered from depression and was on anti-depressants but stopped them during pregnancy. I now go for acupuncture for depression but don't know if that helps for sure. Anyone suffered anything similar?

I was diagnosed of an opposite thyroid condition 2 years ago - hyperthyroidism. I was very worried about the diagnosis as we were planning on trying for our first baby (hyperthyroidism makes women less fertile). I was immediately put on medication that is safe for for pregnancy (PTU), just in case we do hit the jackpot and got pregnant. It took me about a year to get my thyroid under control, and while still on medication, I got pregnant! However, it ended in a miscarriage at 6 weeks, which was quite devastating to say the least
8 months after the incident, I got pregnant again (currently on 17th week) and this time, it is going well so far. My thyroid has gone back to normal and was able to stop my medication about 2 months prior to the pregnancy. I am still monitoring my thyroid function frequently to make sure it doesn't come back.
Well, the whole point is, there are pregnancy-safe medications that can control your thyroid, and as long as your doctor monitors your thyroid function and controls medication well, it really should not be a problem.
I heard that hypothyroidism (like yours) is not rare during pregnancy. I am sure you will be fine.
I'm sorry I can't really comment on the depression part....

i suffer from hypothrydoidism I've been on hormone supplements for the past 5years.
almost 2 years ago after about 4months of trying i got pregnant, rpegnancy went well without a hitch and my baby is now 12months old....
do start taking the pills. it will most probably help with exhaustion, depression etc. Anger, well can be part and parcel of pregnancy.
Hang in there. good luck.

thanks, spoke to my doctor and she said that my tsh are low but t3 and t4 are normal. It could be that I was on prozac for two yrs and stopped it last yr to take up a milder version of anti-dep which also I stopped as I was scared of my first trimester risk and the exhaustion and the blues, anger could be part of my depression or perhaps my low TSH level added on, I am back on old mild anti-dep and today felt much better. I guess I just need to wait to re-check my tsh level and hope it will be normal now and not below average next time. Does anyone know if low tsh level is something to be weary of?

From what I understand, as long as your T3, T4 levels are normal, a slightly abnormal level on TSH probably would not give you any symptoms and do not need to go on medication. Your abnormal TSH level may be due to your pregnancy, as thyroid function is affected by it.
Just monitor it well, and I am sure your doctor will be able to suggest to you if you need medication in the future. Good luck!

Your thyroid levels may fluctuate during pregnancy and a low level does not necessarily mean you are truly low for this hormone. You shold check this with your obstetrician, or see an endocrinologist to discuss.
Also, if you have been depressed before, and stopped your anti-depressants, you may want to discuss ‘strategies’ on how to manage your moods during your pregnancy. This may include medications but does not necessarily have to include these. Accupuncture has anecdotaly been described to help depression, however psychotherapy, and in particular cognitive behaviour therapy may be more helpful.
