Maternity care in Hong Kong

Hi all, first time on the discussion board. I am an expectant mother, anxiously waiting for my first child to arrive. Since my husband and I are expat's here (no in-laws around) and have very little experience in newborn care, we are seriously considering hiring professional maternity care services. Wonder if anyone has had tried in the past and what your experiences were. Any good agency you can recommend? We can speak both English & Mandarin. Thanks

I can recommend Annerley Midwives, they'll take care of you: www.annerley.com.hk

Otherwise, Yvonne Heavyside is excellent - she's a registered and fully qualified health visitor and can help you with preparing for the baby and up until the child is 5 years old. Her tel number is: 2530 1905 and her e-mail is yvonneheavyside@netvigator.com.

We used Annerley and they are good especially if you want someone to come to your house. We bought a pack of home visits (as well as antenatal classes) but really only needed two of the home visits so my advice would be to not buy too many in advance as you may find you have a good baby and don't need a lot of specialist help. We have also visited Crystal at the Well Baby clinic at the Matilda Hospital and she is great too. Not sure if she does home visits. Really depends on what you want from professional maternity care services. If you mean handling any baby sleeping issues then Annerley run a sleep clinic too.

As a first time mother also with 4 month old baby, I too was thinking about having someone come and visit me at home once bub arrived. Looking back now I'm glad I never went ahead and paid out the money for this home help. This is not to suggest it is not good but rather I suggest to wait until baby arrives. You will find that friends also had same/similar experiences and you will learn from them and as you go along. It may be something that the baby does at 4 in the morning or 2 in the afternoon and unless the midwife can stay with you 24/7, you may not get the answers to all your questions sorted. speak to friends, work colleagues, those who had babies beforehand. Also I found the government hospital excellent. Whilst I had my baby at Adventist, we took bub to govt clinic (Hospital Rd, HK side) and they were wonderful, answered all the questions we had, showed me how to and how not to breastfeed and at one stage needed some medication for belly button and it was all free. Personally I would wait and 99.9% of situations you will encounter will also have been experienced by other here or abroad so just ask friends and family for advice and your maternal instinct will kick in and you will be fine. Good luck!
