Breastfeeding and period return?

Hi

My baby is 9 months old and I have cut down to 2 breastfeeds a day and intending to drop the last 2 in the next few weeks. Still no sign of the return of my period. Is this unusual as I had thought that it would return when I cut back or is it usually only after you stop completely?

Thanks in advance

Hi SB2

With my first son I cut down to three a day by about a year and had still not had my period when I fell pregnant with my 2nd son! Then with my 2nd one I breastfed until 16 months but had cut down dramatically by this point - just a couple of times a day but not for long so don't even know how much he was getting. I think my periods came back soon after that. I think it depends on the person and how regular they were before (mine periods weren't) but I have heard it's normal for it to take a couple of months even after stopping completely. This hasn't helped much I know. Just thought I'd share my experience!

Hi SB2,

I breastfed exclusively for 13 months and my period didn't come till 2 months after I completely stopped breastfed. But I have a friend who also exclusively breastfed but her period came back in the 6th months or so. It really differs from one person to another. Not to worry.

Back then I resisted and did not pump until it regulated itself. Yes they were engorged and painful the first few days. Don't pump. Just try to squeeze a little bit with your own hand to relieve the pain. You will find that after a week or so the milk supply will dramatically reduce and the pain will be gone.

No worries.

I agree with Nicher in that I think you should just stick it out and not pump. I only pumped when I gave a bottle of expressed milk/formula and therefore missed a feed. I did not pump when I was intentionally missing a feed. Having said that, I did not experience too much discomfort with engorgement.
