Not sure about specialists in HK but there is a well known theory/method called the Shettles method. Google it to find out some more information. There is a book which describes the methods - Shettles, Landrum B.; David M. Rorvik (2006-10-10). How to Choose the Sex of Your Baby: Fully revised and updated (Rev Upd ed.). Broadway. p. 256


Mixed views from specialists on whether this works (as well as many views on whether it is right).

To be 100% sure you'd need to use "assistance" eg IVF treatment so they can screen the embryos the following lab in Thailand offers it, but have no personal knowledge of their operation / success rate www.ivfmiraclebaby.com

There are no medical test that can guarantee you the sex of a baby, be grateful for having a healthy baby regardless of gender

tobs whilst I would agree with you that having a healthy baby regardless of gender is the sensible choice I can somewhat understand the posters desire (assuming all info is true) as to have a son after three daughters! On the other hand if you really want to select the sex of your child you can carry out PGD which has a higher than 99% success rate ....almost a guarantee but not quite!

Not sure what a PGD is but if you have an amniocentsis or CVS (placental biopsy) it will tell you the sex. The down side it involves a long needle going into the uterus (yes it is as scary as it sounds) and you risk damage to the fetus and possibly mischarge. Depends on how much you really want a boy?

That is certainly the way to determine the sex of the baby once conceived but what do you do if the amnio determines that the fetus is a girl and the OP wants a boy? Request the doctor to perform a termination?? I do not believe that a doctor in HK will allow a termination because the sex of the fetus is not what the parents are wanting (and nor do I think it should be allowed from a moral perspective - although this is not a discussion to be had on these forums).

I think that you will find that most OB's are under a moral obligation to not steer you one way or another as to the sex of a baby. However, from what I understand an OB can steer you in one way or the other if he choses too. I had IUI for both my pregnancies and even before we did the amnio we pretty much knew that both were boys. For example, I had to have fertility treatment but my husbands sperm count was fine. In fact my husband was consistent in his samples that over 95% where what they call Grade A (fast swimmers) which are the boy sperm. Both my Docs admitted that it would probably be a boy on both occasions. My point is, it is the man who determines the sex. Your Doc may be able to perform IUI or IVF and select which sperm to use. However not sure if this is legal or ethical. Because of the info I have on my own case I know that if I desperately wanted a girl and tried and tried after 2 or 3 kids, I would probably only ever end up with boys. That's fine by me though as I love little boys.

My parents have 4 children – all boys

When my eldest brother married his first child was a boy. The second and the third were too. Then came the fourth with lots of hopes, but it was same same – a boy.

When my second brother married his first child was also a boy. The second and the third were too.

Now my mother was called officially as boys maker. After 4 sons and 7 grandsons who can argue with that. I tried, but I still was looking myself in other worlds than marriage and kids.

My second brother decided that he must give a chance to other options… to choose the gender. Here he came up with this solution, and it worked. He had a girl!!! (by the way, till today he has another beautiful child girl).
