quintin,

We have also been waiting since January of this year though, 2009. So, you have been waiting over a year and a half already? Wow, not good.

This is our 2nd adoptiong here in HK. And our understanding is 3 days - the following Monday. IF you do not want to accept the child, SWD needs to contact the 2nd match they have. There are sometimes circumstances where they may let you have a few extra days. (A friend of mine was in that situation).

I don't agree 100% thast Chinese should always been given prefernce over non-Chinese. It seems unfait that some Caucasian families have to wait sooo long.

Basically you have been waiting as long as us- we were approved Jan. 3, 2009.

It appears that there are ALOT more adoptive parents than when we adopted 2 years ago. And many more Chinese waiting as well. Since the majority of the children here in HK are of Chinese/Asian ethnicity, and they get matched with the same, it does leave us Western/Caucasian parents out and waiting alot longer. Although I understand it, I do not really like it or accept it.

Wish they could understand our point of view too and make changes, but it will never happen

Hi quintin,

"Although we have matched on several occassions the preference is always given to Chinese parents when the child has the same ethnic background."

Just wondering what you mean by this. How do you know you have been matched but not chosen? I didn't realize you could be matched but not picked. Just curious.

Thanks quintin. I haven't contacted our social worker very often so didn't know they would tell you that. Good luck!

Is it possible to even "not accept" a referral? Wow, overseas, they DONT even allow us to decide. You just got to accept a referral for traditional adoptions (which is 5-6 yrs wait period for China adoptions). For SN children, we could accept or not accept. We have a few days to research the med . history/challenges, talk to specialists, etc. They give you a little bit leeway for SN children. But if you do not accept a couple of referrals, then they will start to question your desire (or lack of ) wanting to adopt. So it seems like local adoption in HK is much easier than back home.

If you mean...not accept the child you were matched to?...then yes...sometimes something just doesnt feel right...it is a lifelong decision so if you dont feel comfortable about something you can say no...happens quite a bit. I guess if you did say no too many times they certainly would question your purposes!
