Hi,

Anyone delivered a baby at St Paul's Hospital in Causeway Bay?

How was the service?

I delivered at St Pauls in 2009, an emergency c-section. I had a semi-private room. I speak Mandarin but not Cantonese and I found it difficult to communicate with the nurses. Most can speak Mandarin but English was patchy, except for the more senior nurses.

Other than another local HK mother whom I share the room with, all the other mothers were from Mainland China. The hallway was often noisy with a lot of visitors speaking very loudly.

Unless you are in a private room, they impose strict visiting/ breastfeeding slots for you to see your baby. Fathers only get one slot in the evening. If you can get the attention of the nurses, they "might" push the cot to the window so you can see your baby. If you visit the nursery, you can see the visiting times pasted on the wall outside the nursery.

There was no one to show me how to breastfeed (i'm a first-time mum). The nurses were unfriendly when I asked for help (for eg. to get a breastfeeding pillow because I could not bend down due to a c-section). Two nurses asked me every time they see me "how come your milk has not come?". And needless to say, they fed my baby with formula without asking for my permission.

I wouldn't have delivered at St Paul's if I had known.

Hhhhmmm doesn't sound very promising!

We would definately book a private room and because it's my second, I am hoping I wouldn't need much breastfeeding help. I asked my doctor about the staff speaking English and he said there was no problem... but I think I might also have heard some negative stuff about St Pauls before too.

Would love to hear anyone elses experience.

Thanks Woodstock.
