Is IVF free for married couples in HK?

Hi, I was told by a mummy that if you hold a hk i.d card and your married, you were eligible for 'free' ivf treatment.

Does anyone know if this is true? Or how I would go about finding out if it is true?

Thanks,

Lou

Yes it's true but you'll be put into in a very long waiting list of some public hospitals. Maybe a couple of years. Or, you could go for the private ones (no queues) which would cost you around HKD80k. Since the success rate of IVF is only about 33% you should give a try at both places.

Hi,

I'm 40, and apparently the goverment don't fund IVF for women 40+ ;-( The prince of wales, costs 45-60,000 hk Not sure why it seems a lot cheaper than the sanotarium or qmh. Has anyone done ivf at the pwh?

IVF services are in very high demand in HK. We went to the Sanatorium last year and was quoted approx. $200K for the full service (by memory, $80K would have been just to harvest the eggs...maybe it was specific to my situation.) Due to an urgent medical situation and sheer luck, we managed to get a last minute appointment at QMH's private clinic (told normally a years wait - with a much longer wait for the govt. service) and was quoted approx. $80K in total. My friend has done IVF at PWH for a bit cheaper but that was several years ago and there is a very long line too (could not get in 'urgently' at all as a private patient). There are other private clinics in HK (i.e. in Central - just google) but if you can't afford to pay top $ then sorry to disappoint but your best chances will probably be going overseas - we also considered Aus/NZ which were in fact slightly cheaper than QMH but was not something we could manage timing wise due to the situation we were facing (BTW - apart from age, many IVF clinic's also have weight and other health related restrictions). We are no longer pursing IVF due to a change in our situation again but my doctors have mentioned Thailand as a popular place for HK expats to go or many have gone on to adopt. Hope this helps and all the best!

I think that for an over-40 woman, IVF is a big waste of money as the odds are really really bad. something like 5% success rate.

Unfortunately egg donation is virtually impossible in HK, so you have a much better chance in places like Thailand, if you are Asian.

If you are Caucasian, try Spain, they have excellent IVF programs and the waiting list is less than one year for IVF with donor's eggs.

I heard that Ukraine is also a good option, a much closer than Spain.
