Sai Kung to Matilda hospital...

Hi,

I'm just wondering if anyone has experience of living in Sai Kung and getting to the Matilda hospital to deliver? I booked in at the Matilda without giving a lot of thought to how I would get there, and now I'm getting concerned about it as I've heard stories of taxi drivers refusing to take you and ambulances only taking you to the nearest public hospital. We don't have a car and while I'm aware that our hospital choice was probably not the smartest... I'm hoping that someone else has found themselves in our situation and can offer some advice!

Thanks so much in advance.

From what i know, ambulances have the responsibility to assess your situation before deciding where to take you. if your situation is not urgent, they will take you to the hospital of your choice. BUT given that, i'm not sure they will bring you all the way to Matilda from Sai Kung.

Taxis: i would've thought they'd be happy to get business from Sai Kung to Matilda. it's big business!

unless, you're having an emergency, i don't think you should worry so much. there's lots of time to get to the hospital even when you start to contract.

Thanks for your advice - and I think you're right, I should have plenty of time. I'm just a bit nervous as it's my first baby and I'm unsure about timing my run to the hospital.

You should be fine getting a taxi and normally speaking you will have enough time to get to the Matilda. However if it is rush hour the journey will take longer. So be prepared, have your hospital bag completely packed so that you are ready to go when it's time! (And think, most things in that bag you won't need during delivery, so if you have forgotten something, your husband can go and get it later.) Also I advise you to go to the Matilda once or twice before the delivery, so you yourself know the route. There are signs to the hospital but still, you will feel better if you know how much longer it will be or if you need to give the taxi driver some directions! I should know, I have delivered two babies there myself and was happy I knew the way. Good luck!

Thanks for this advice. I'm feeling a little more relaxed about things and I think doing a test run to the hospital is a really good idea. Thanks again. : )

Yep, my sisters labor lasted 18 hours, another friend had a 24 hour labor and I think unless you are super duper mom, you can betcha you will be able to make it to the Matilda with time to spare :)

I live in Sai Kung and I delivered at Hong Kong Adventis, I also thought about transport and stuff before I picked. Adventis is very close to where I work so I thought if baby came early lol. In the end, she came after maternity started. We have a car, and my labour started at 4am. I left home though at 845am. My Ob told me that for a first time mom, we should at least have 8 hrs on average to proceed all the way to the time when we were ready to give birth. And my midwife told me to time the contraction before heading off home too. Her advice was not to go too soon. So don't worry, I am sure you can get a taxi from home to Matilda. You can also call the 'on call taxi service' if you cannot find one. Agree with pp, taxi drivers will be happy to take you all the way to Matilda.

Thanks so much. Knowing a lot more about the stages of labour now, I'm pretty confident about making it to the hospital. I probably won't love the taxi ride, but I'll get there! Thanks again for the advice and reassurance.
