Cost of giving birth at Queen Mary

Many apologies if this has been asked many times before. A good friend of mine has just found out that she is pregnant. I am thinking of covering the costs for all appointements and the birth itself. Is queen mary public option the least expensive way? Can you give me an estimated total cost? Many thanks in advance.

If the mother is a Hong Kong resident holding an HK ID card then she will be charged $100 per day to occupy a general inpatient bed in a public hospital (like the Queen Mary) which may be in addition to a $50 admittance fee and a $60 attendence fee from the Doctor. However, if the mother is not a Hong Kong resident then the costs can go up quite quickly. If she has received pre-natal treatment in HK and has made the booking locally then her costs of delivery through the public system will be HK$ 39,000 for a routine delivery package (http://hk.ccw-global.com/health-insurance/coverage/maternity/), but if she has not received any treatment locally, or pre-booked within HK then she may be liable to a basic delivery cost in the area of HK$ 90,000 - at which point it may make sense to look at your private options.


The Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, United Christan Hospital, and the Kwong Wah Hospital all operate under the public healthcare system and will all have the same basic rates for maternity services as defined by the Hospital Authority (http://www.ha.org.hk/) - these rates are universal so it doesn't really matter which hospital you use, and you're probably better off going to the facility closest to you. However, the Queen Mary is affiliated with Hong Kong University's School of Medicine and tends to have slightly higher standards than its counterparts within the public system.
