umbilical cord blood banking

ORIGINAL POST

We are planning to have our baby here in HKG, but will eventually move back to Asutralia in a few years.

Does anyone know of a reputable company that will provide umbilical cord blood banking and ship it back to our home country of Australia?

hi xox and nicher,

Are you considering it? we might too but still don't know which company, there's "cryolife" here, i think they are the pioneer, they've been in the business for 10 years.

Yea... Hubby and I are thinking about that too. I talked to the guy in CordLife yesterday at the Baby Fair, he said if I decide to go for it, should register before the 8th month as there are documentations to work on.

How many years of storage are you considering?

Hi Nicher,

No idea yet, but we just registered(no commitment) at baby fair to avail of that $1,000 discount.

And you, how many years are you considering? I'm just surfing about it now.

Hi Honeypie, I have no idea how long I should save yet. Want to consult my doctor to see if he has advice for me. So you'll go for Cryolife if you have to choose then?

i think so, there's a new company - healthy baby(?) but it started last May only, so i don't think we'll go for that.

I am about to have my second baby in 3 weeks and we are having the cord blood collected by the Australian company Cryosite. They collected our first child's blood in Sydney. They are apparently the only company licensed under the Thereputic Goods Act (TGA) to handle blood products in or out of Australia. Their web address is www.cryosite.com. Once i contacted them and filled in the forms etc they had the kit to my home in HK within a week. Hope this helps.

Hi Monkeybear, how many years of storage have you decided on? And how much does the service cost?

Hi Nicher

For both we have done the one off payment that includes 18 years storage. The price at the moment i think is about $3000 AUD and then on top of that you have to pay $1000 AUD for the shipping of the kit back and forth to HK. That being said, once paid you do not have to worry about it for 18 years. I think they only have 18 year storage (but you can pay for it on different plans) after 18 years you can either choose to renew the storage contract or destroy the blood. Cheers

Thank you Monkeybear. The ones I've checked on are also up to 18 years storage. Costs are similar too but they have storage in HK so no shipping charge is incurred.

Does anyone knows whether the cord blood will expire after a certain number of years?
