Checking a stroller on a flight without a child

Has anyone had any experience buying a stroller or baby seat in the US, where it is MUCH cheaper than HK, and bringing it back on a flight when they dont have a child travelling with them? I am pregnant, travelling back on United so i am only allowed one piece of checked luggage. Anyone had experience doing this, have you been charged? the policy allows for one piece but not sure how i will go with no child.

thanks

We have a friend that did that and they allowed them to check the stroller without any fee. They were flying business so that may help but they even kept it in the original box (plus had 2 bags i.e. had the max allowance). I think being a pregnant lady helps also, so if it was your husband only it probably wouldn't work. Still a risk though so worth checking with the airline.
