I am looking at the Adventist, Canossa, Matilda and Sanatorium - has anyone got any strong preference for any of these hospitals? If so, why? I appreciate that the prices are different but what about service and aftercare? Thanks!

If price is no object, I loved our experience at Matilda and am returning there for #2.

I have to first say, I was a total sceptic and did not want to go to 'the expat hospital' and was leaning towards some others...

But we did the tours, asked our questions, and chose Matilda.

And I am sooo glad we did. They followed our birth plan, midwifes were on call and excellent and pro breastfeeding. I feel we had the BEST start as a family as a result.

Now saying all of that, there are many women on this thread who will say positive things about each hospital, as each has its own benefits - so I do suggest taking the tours and asking lots of questions to find the one that best suits your needs.

Good luck!!

The Matilda was fabulous, a real luxuary. If your insurance covers it, go for it!

Matilda - no question. And I used Dr Sally Ferguson at OT&P in Shiu On House, Wanchai. She delivers at Matilda and in fact lives just around the corner which makes it very convenient. Matilda was great, and Sally was wonderful right through the pregnancy and afterwards.

I would speak to your doctor first as your doctor will be able to tell you all the pros and cons objectively.

As for doctors while it is a personal choice I would go for Dr Choy at Care for Women in New World Tower (tel 3112 0480). Unquestionably the best and most caring and I think she does operations at all the hospitals you mention.

I delivered my baby at Matilda and I can only strongly recommend it to you.

The maternity staff is fantastic, the nurses are great and they were always ready to help me.

The only downside is that it's quite remote, so if you want your elder children to visit you, it's quite a long way to go. But still, you're there only for a few days, so it's not a big fuss at the end.

My doctor was Dr Alex Doo, he's really excellent, very professional and competent. I would definitively recommend him to you.

His office is in Central (Queen's Road).

We will be relocating to HK next Jan, and living in Clear Water Bay. Any recommendations for private hospitals & OB-GYNs nearby?

My current health plan doesn't cover such costs, any recommendations for this?

Lizkim1 -

if you are not pregnant yet,

and planning to get pregnant,

and can afford private insurance (about 2-3K USD per year)

I would go for Allianz Worldwide Care International Plan - it is one of the few plans that covers full maternity costs in HK.

But be careful which plan you choose.

Look at this link:

http://www.allianzworldwidecare.com/EN/IndividualBusiness/Step2/index.php

International

Core Plan

And you will see that Maternity is covered in full.

You need to be sure to choose:

International, not Asia Plan

Premier

It covers all costs for pre-natal checks, hospitals, private rooms, epidural, doctor, pediatrician, jaundice treatments, etc...

Just to compare - going private in HK including doctor and private room at hospital can run over HKD 100,000 (USD 13,000) - so comparitively spending 3,000 USD on health insurance is cheap!

To get insurance contact Neil Raymond or Christian at Kwiksure.

If you are pregnant already your best options are - go for a 'ward room' at a private hospital, which at Matilda has 3 beds but you might be the only person. Or go public, where you can choose a private room for a small amount more money.

Whichever you choose, do look into the Pre-Natal Class + Home Visits from Annerley- they are wonderful- you get the classes (and meet other parents to be) and 6 home visits which are a total godsend! They have other services too. http://www.amidwife.com (BTW - Allianz covered this cost for me too!!)

Good luck on your relocation to Hong Kong!!

In terms of the surrounding and environment, Matilda has the advantage, but you will have to pay for this. In terms of medical skill, you can shop around for your own private doctor. This is important if you have complications in your pregancy which will be the one most important factor to a successful birth and not the hospital environment itself.
