Which ob/gyn would you recommend? I've been to Dr. Alex Doo before. He was good but I felt that he was rushing through things (For the procedures, the nurse prepped me and he just came in for the procedures). I also didn't like the long wait prior to the visit.
And, I heard that Matilda is best for delivery. But, my local friends who delivered at the Sanatorium/ Canossa/ Adventist said that those hospitals are really good too. So, what's the difference between these hospitals (besides the costs??). And is it true that some hospitals will put you on a waiting list?
The costs will be partially covered and finances aren't an issue. So, I just want to know the differences between the hospitals...
My husband and I are planning to start a family (not pregnant yet) and would like to get all the necessary info ahead of time so there aren't any surprises...
Thanks in advance!

I recommend Lucy Lord in Central, phone number 2824 0822. She can come across a bit cold, but she really knows she stuff.
Best hospital is Matilda. I have also had friends deliver at other hospitals, but Matilda is very very good (don't go to Sanatorium if you don't speak Cantonese, as few staff speak english). All hospitals put you on a waiting list, whether they tell you that or not.
All hospitals have websites and staff relation officers, so you can give them a call to discuss the services they provide.

I just delivered (C-section) a baby with Dr.Philip Ho at Matilda. Although, I adore Dr.Ho, he can be all those things you disliked about Dr.Doo. He certianly is not a warm fuzzy type and most of the time, you have to wait min of 30 min on every appointments with him. But man that guy is great when you really really need services of a doctor. I went through alot with him because of infertility for several years and he is the only doctor I would trust to give me a striaght answer and take care of me.
Matilda is great. I had Dr.Ho/Dr.Yau (Anesth)/Dr.Wong (Pediatrician) team for delivery and post care. The private room isnt all that to write home about but the support you get from the staff were worth the money it cost. They do everything in their power to encourage to breast feed and are very prompt and sensitive to your needs. I only used Adventist for a couple of routine stuff and wasnt too impressed with it. And it is true about Sanitorium. Although it is a very nice hospital, most of the nurses do not speak fluent English and the communications was sometime difficult.

well done for thinking it out in advance- I found myself 6 wks pregnant and frantically posting on here/ calling insurance co trying to find out what the system is
I think one of the issues is that most of the Obs in HK are very busy so can be a little business like in their approach. However, a lot of the difference in opinion seems to depend on where the person is from and what they're used to in their home country. People from the US who are used to very good, personalised private care might find them a bit rushed/impersonal, whereas if you're from the UK and used to the good old NHS then you'll think you've died and gone to heaven.
I second Lucy Lord at Central. She is quite brisk and doesn't have time for small talk, but I feel very confident that she knows her stuff and her midwives are great. The clinic itself is calm and unchaotic and I've never been delayed more than 20 mins past my appt time. Her sonographer, Katherine, is also very good.
I havent delivered yet but am booked into the Matilda. Main reason for choosing it was proximity to my house but most people who have been there seem to have been happy with their choice. The additional cost is partly explained by the more luxurious surroundings but if money's not an issue, I'd go for it.
One thing to be aware of is that you need to get booked into these private hospitals early- at 9 weeks ideally so go to see your chosen Obs as soon as you get the blue line, even if that feels like stupidly early. Whether you are accepted can (allegedly) depend on how well connected the Obs is with the hospital so if you have a strong hospital preference, pick an Obs that gives that hospital a lot of business :-)

I am seeing Dr. Hon. He is the partner of Dr. Ho. He is wonderful, caring and he spends time answering questions and I have never felt rushed.
I also have partial coverage with my insurance and have decided to deliver at Adventist hospital.
I have heard great things about Matilda especially their private rooms with balcony. I have also heard good things about the food.

Thank you all for your invaluable advice! Matilda, it will be! I'll do more research on the obs... Thanks again!

I delivered with Dr Doo and I would encourage you not judge him until you are pregnant. There is no doubt his practice is very busy but he does an extremely thorough scan at every appointment which I think is partly the reason he runs late. I found that he generally had a very pleasant manner although there were times he wasn't as personable as usual but I think that is reasonable when he is up at all hours delivering babies etc. I managed the waiting time for the appointments by calling the surgery beforehand and checking how many patients were still waiting. The receptionists were always willing to give me an estimated time and it wasn't usually far off. Also the only prep the nurses do is taking blood pressure, Dr Doo does all the scans himself. In addition he is very responsive to calls out of hours and is also very supportive and encouraging of natural deliveries if that is important to you.

Agreed with monkey1211 - I delivered with Dr Doo last year and saw him through out my pregnancy. I had great experience with him although the long wait can be quite frustrating at times. I just took my laptop or a book to read while waiting. If you book early in the morning the wait is very short, unless he got called into delivery. I can't say enough good things about Dr Doo.
