Finding private gynae but delivering in public hospital

Hi, can anyone recommend a good gynae that practises in Causeway Bay or North Point?

I had a really bad experience with a private gynae yesterday. She was very nice to us during my first visit in March when we did not tell her that I am planning to have my baby in the public hospital. I saw her for the second time yesterday after more than a month. After waiting for 1.5 hours to see her despite having an appointment, her attitude was completely different once she found out that we have decided to have the baby at the Nethersole Eastern Hospital and I have scheduled to do the Down Syndrome Screening there too. So it meant that she was not going to make money out of me. I was in there for five minutes and she was impatient with my questions. I have been throwing up two to three times a day and can barely keep food down. Her only advice is for me to cut back on my food intake (huh? I'm eating very little as it is!!!) and that since I'm not gaining any weight, she doesn't see what's the problem!!!

I really would like to avoid another doctor like her. Did anyone see a good gynae while opting to deliver in a public hospital?

Hi there,

Unfortunately I can't reccommend a gynae but just wanted to say you are not alone with your experience.

I am going public and ended up just having the scans done privately (HK Prenatal Diagnostic Clinic) and prenatal care through the public clinics. All fine if your pregnancy is low risk, straightforward. If anything, the public system seems a little more thorough and pedantic than what I have seen friends go through with their private doctor. A couple of friends have also noted a sharp shift in attitude with their private doctor once they advise of a public delivery. To me, it's just not worth it given the amount of money you pay them (if they treat you like that!).

Good luck, I hope you find someone decent.

Hi there, thanks for your reply. I just went to the Nethersole Eastern Hospital today for the Down Syndrome Screening and was very pleasantly surprised at the service and attitude of the medical staff. They were very thorough and gave me an ultrasound scan, even though I didn't know that they were going to do this today (wish I asked my husband to come along. He would have love to see it).

You are right, the hospital is more thorough that that idiot gynae I paid to see. I've decided to forget about finding a private doctor and just stick with what the hospital has to offer. Not worth paying a lot of money just to get pissed by a private doctor.

To be fair, there are many great private doctors...

Before seeing the particular gynecologist earlier this week, I had previously seen another IVF specialist/gynecologist in Central. He is very well-known and came highly recommended. He seemed nice but was pushing us to decide on IVF ($100,000 per try), saying that we have no chance of conceiving naturally or even with IUI. The report he gave on my husband was damning and we were devastated, not to mention the mental agony we went through. That was in January. I conceived naturally in February. Needless, I refused to go back to him, even to prove him wrong. It seems to me that both gynecologists are only interested in making money rather than caring for the well being of their patients.

If there is a good private gynecologist out there who would treat his or her patients well regardless of whether they go to private or public hospitals, I would love to be proven wrong.

Ths same thing happened to me. A very popular ob/gyn in Central. His attitude completely changed after I told him I will be delivering in my home country. That was really dissapointing as I liked him a lot and think a great deal of him in the beginning. My monthly visits to his clinic were all so stressful! Why oh why!?!

I'm glad you found the public system good. It certainly takes some getting used to, but once you know what to expect it really is good.

From what I've been told about the actual hospital stay, just don't expect any bedside manner or 'pampering' if you can call it that. Also ask questions (and demand answers) as they don't tend to volunteer info as readily to the patient.

BTW - we were also told (in Australia) that it was no-go without IVF due to sperm count / abnormality etc. We conceived naturally 2 months later (6 weeks after arriving in HK!)

Glad to hear that you succeeded naturally too. I didn't think I would do well with all that medications to increase my egg production. The expensive ob/gyn in Central wanted us to decide on IVF within three months or it will be too late (I'm 37 years old). Talk about giving pressure!

Anyway, I have found the Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital to be really professional and prompt. I've never had to wait for more than 10 minutes in my last two appointments and they have comfortable waiting areas for pregnant women, what with high backed chairs with extra cushioning for your lower backs. Frankly, the waiting areas at the private clinics I've been to were horribly uncomfortable. The doctors and nurses were really nice and friendly. No complaints, really.
