Positive home test... Where do I start?

ORIGINAL POST
Posted by flowertot 16 yrs ago
I have been reading through the posts in this section and while there is a lot of helpful information, I'm still really confused... After testing positive at home, what is my next step? Do I just pick an OB/GYN that I like the sound of and make an appointment to get the pregnancy confirmed? Or can I do this with a regular GP as you would in the UK? Will the doctor recommend a hospital according to my area, or is it up to me to choose? Do I need to check which OBs work with these hospitals first? I don't have insurance, but am happy to pay for private care (up to a point!) Am I right in thinking that you pay the doctors fees, test fees and hospital fees seperately? So the total figure could be as much as $100,000?

Sorry for so many questions, but it's too early to ask friends for advice. Thanks for any help!

Congratulations seem a great place to start.

Next a deep breath as it can be difficult making all the choices and so early in the pregancy.

If you have a regular GP you can go there for a confirmation test however in Hong Kong it is not unusual for ladies to go directly to an obstetrician if they know who they want to see. If not your doctor can recommend one.

The doctor may have a preference for where they prefer to deliver but it should be somewhere you are comfortable with so I suggest you call a few and arrange to have a look around.

There is a list of useful questions to ask on a tour on our website so you can cover all the bases.

All private hospitals in Hong Kong are very busy with deliveries and inorder to secure a place I recommend you choose early and have the blood tests and scan done to confirm dates and up the the hospital not later than the 9th week.Earlier if possible. This is not to be pushy, beds really are limited if you want to have a choice.

The fees can come to $100,000 in total especially if you need an emergency section but too early to come to that conclusion yet, but worth planning for financially. Please check out our website we list all the prices http://www.matilda.org/pricelist/pricelist.php also check the notes page to clarify what is covered. You will also need to check with your insurer on inclusions and if any co-payment is required.

Most private hospitals (not ours) require you to pay a deposit on booking.

Once you have a book confirmed through your doctor you can check in on line with the hospital and we will directly send you a confirmation of booking.

For a tour please call our client relations manager on 28949 0355.

If I can help further please feel free to give me a call on 2849 0328

Thanks neenib, but I don't seem to have recieved your pm.

Lynne (Matilda) thankyou for your information. I really like the look of Matilda but I think it might be too far for me as I am on Kowloon side.

Thank you all for your responses. I have booked an appointment at the Womens Clinic, so I guess that's step one dealt with! Can anyone tell me if I will have any tests done at this apt. (I'll be 6 weeks). In the UK they don't do an ultrasound until 12 weeks, but I would quite like to have one done earlier for my own piece of mind as I'm feeling a bit "odd" and wonder if I may have got my dates mixed up!

Sorry, I meant that I have an appointment for a consultation at "The Women's Clinic". It's a private center in Central Building. I believe I will be seeing Dr Alexander Doo.

My cycle has been a bit messed up recently, but I'm pretty sure that I do have my dates right. I just feel different to my first pregnancy, and my stomach is already rounding out. I know everyone says that 2nd time around you show earlier, but I don't see how I will be able to keep this a secret when I am already finding my jeans too tight! I guess I'm worried that it might be twins : 0

They will more than likely do an ultrasound to see how far along you and also to book you into a hospital. I had an ultrasound & bloodtest at 6-8 weeks which was needed in order to book into Matilda. I think it is the same with other private hospitals, but not sure about the public.

congrats, flowertot! i myself just found out that i am pregnant after trying for nearly a year!!! =)

since this is my first one, i wasn't sure what to do after seeing the double lines on the pregnancy kit. good that i stumbled upon your thread. i had my yearly check up done with doc catherine cheung in COSCO tower (OB/GYN) so guess i have to go to her to confirm the pregnancy and get a date so that i can book a room with private/public..not sure about the differences!

btw, does anyone know which docs go to QMH?

good luck, flowertot! even if it is twins, it will still be very joyful. my sis has twins and they are the most adorable kids on the planet.

No outside private doctors, but you can go as a private patient at the Government hospitals, you select which Doctor (at the hospital) you want to see, then you'll see them for every visit and the delivery.

Hello kissy.missy and congratulations to you too! Please let me know how you get on with Catherine Cheung. Maybe we can compare notes as time goes on?

cd your comment is interesting. I didn't realise that it was possible to see a private doctor for check ups at a government hospital. Mind you, at this stage I haven't got a clue which hospital to go for...

The reason I am not too sure of Catherine Cheung is that when I went to do my annual checkup early this year, she seemed to be in a rush. It was "just" an annual checkup but if I go back to her for prenatal/pregancy/postnatal then she might just do the same and I wouldn't be a happy bunny!

What I have been suggested is to do a pregnancy test with a local GP for the sake of written confirmation (hope his result will show me positive since I tested only once on the pregnancy kit) and then take that confirmation, your ID and your hubby's ID (copy) and a proof of address to Tan Yuk Hospital (Sheung Wan) for prenatal/pregnancy/postnatal. They will book an appointment in QMH when they are able to confirm the delivery date.

I am choosing QMH since it is closer to my apartment. I am insured by my firm and wouldn't mind using Matilda but I think it is a tad bit expensive if the costs are going to run upto $100K! I kind of feel guilty using too much of the insurance money....

My first step is to go to the GP tomorrow (if he is open on public hol) and do a pregnancy test. I'll keep you posted and hope you'll do the same, flowertot! :)

I agree - first step - congratulations to you.

As a guide to costs with a private doctor - I figure it was about HK$15K for checks with my specialist pre-delivery (about once a month and then fortnightly towards the end). He did a scan every time we saw him but these were generally just a quick one to take some measurements and to give us the pleasure of seeing the baby/baby's heartbeat. My specialist did not charge extra for these quick ones but did charge extra for the 12 weeks (nuchal fold/downs test) scan and the 20 week (organ check) scan as these were both much more extensive scans and time consuming too (double appointments). Then my delivery at a private hospital with my specialist was around HK$100K all up (specialist, anaesthetist, paediatrician and hospital). My delivery was fairly normal in the scheme of things (but had an epi) and I was in for 3 nights. I thought the hospital which I delivered at was amazing (great staff and so helpful with a first timer on breastfeeding and baby care etc) and we had taken out insurance specifically to give us that option. Premiums are now a lot more expensive and with policy claim limits so next time around (if there is a next time) we will need to give it a lot of thought. Just wanted to give you an idea of costs. Even with a normal straightforward delivery and including the pre-natal care, the bill for the private system likely to be over HK$100K. If you are paying yourself then you need to consider any complications which you will need to pay for. Our friends delivery bill was HK$250K!

A lot of people I know who did not have insurance have seen a private specialist for the pre-natal checks and then gone public for the delivery. That is a more inexpensive route if you want a bit of hand holding (although with it being your second pregnancy - you may be ok). And of course, there is always the public route which is very inexpensive and, by all accounts, good in terms of quality of care but without the luxuries.

Good luck with your decision.

When I had my last 2 as a private patient at the POW, i(2nd class room) it came to around $20k per child, that included all ante natal care, delivery and stay in hospital, I managed to bring the cost down by coming out after one night, and coming out the same day with the last one. But I think private care at the public hospitals has gone up a lot since the changed the rules with the mainland women etc, probably at least twice that.

lol@cara..i can get full refund through our firm but i really dont want to scrounge especially if the cost is going to be like $100K if i go to matilda..!..i read that QMH does a "2-patient room" too and it'll cost about $50K or something..also, matilda is a bit away from our apartment while QMH is like a 5-mins cab ride..QMH it is then! (..i think!..)

thanks sb2 and cd for your feedbacks and SORRY to flowertot coz i've kind of taken over the thread by my neverending confusion, questions, etc. =os

ok, i will do that cara! thanks once again.

i heard that QMH doesn't give you any anaesthetic drugs even if you scream for it. i wonder how that goes with matilda? i've had anaesthetic drug for a minor surgery when i was in london and i woke up with a headache and that was it..no pain..no nothing! so kind of scared to hear that there will be no anaesthetic drugs provided in QMH. *yikes*

any ideas on the use of anaesthetic drugs in HK hospitals?

oh no, cara! i'm so sorry to hear about your difficult deliveries but i'm sure they were all worth it. =)

my sis who had twins in hk just told me to go get myself checked with dr alex doo. there are like 100000s of suggestions coming to me which i do appreciate but leaves me a bit confused.

for some reason, all the docs are 'off' today. my hubby went around the local area in the morning to see if there is any open but he had no luck. well, i just have to wait till tomorrow.

does anyone know whether dr doo will confirm the pregnancy by doing a pregnancy test in his clinic and also follow up with the antenatal/pregnancy/postnatal? if this is the case then i dont have to go to the GP just to confirm the pregnancy then go to another place for the antenatal/pregnancy/postnatal.

because of my big mouth, many of my closed friends have come to know that i'm pregnant since i've been trying for nearly a year. hope i haven't jinxed it. =(

Kissymissy have you seen a doctor yet? If your sister recommends Dr Doo I think you should take her advice. I had my first appointment with Dr Doo today and felt very comfortable with him. The clinic is very busy, but it's a nice place so it's not too bad to sit and wait. I had to wait about 40 minutes from my appointment time. They give you a urine test to confirm the pregnancy and then your blood test is done at the lab around the corner. I was surprised at the cost of the blood work, which was $3000. The consultation with Dr Doo cost $1200 plus $1000 for an ultrasound. I wasn't expecting to have an ultrasound so early, and I guess I could have said no, but curiosity got the better of me. Dr Doo said he would book me into Matilda and I agreed. I don't think he delivers at any other hospital so I am not going to drive my self mad figuring out what the other options are...

yep, im booked with dr doo on wed and tsan yuk on sat. i rushed to dr doo on thurs coz the receptionist said i can do the blood test before the first antenal checkup but when i got there, the receptionist who picked up my call was at lunch and the other receptionist told me that she didn't know why i'm there even though i told her two times that the receptionist on the phone had told me to come in that day to get the blood test done. well, she told me to come back on the booked date (wed). it was a bit of a time-waste as i rushed to get there before 1pm and then......but i guess i still should go back on wed since it's the first antenatal checkup. i'll see how that goes then compare with the appt with tsan yuk then decide where to book the delivery.

matilda doesn't have NICU so my sis said QMH can be a better option incase something goes wrong (hope not!). i'll keep you updated.

I second Matilda especially if you have insurance. I had a great first baby experience there. Midwives fantastic and great to have your specialist there with you. As cara says, they will only transfer you to QMH if something goes wrong but if all straightforward then you can enjoy the Matilda. Could not recommend them enough.

thanks ladies! ever so helpful!! i will book in matilda through dr doo. think i still need to register with tsan yuk (?) incase i have to be transferred to QMH.

i was planning to do half with dr doo and half with tsan yuk since the insurance does not cover too much of the antenatal/postnatal checkups but does full cover on delivery.

congrats beso11! the details of dr doo is as follows:

Room 318, 3/F Central Building, 3 Pedder Street, Central, Hong Kong.

Telephone: 2523 3007

this is my first one too and with all the lovely ladies' help on asiaxpat, i've managed to make few good decisions. the first is to get yourself an appointment either with private doctor or public hospital. good luck!

oh nice one, beso11! i think i'm 7-8 weeks too but i might be wrong as my small belly is already showing and eating like a horse every 4 hours!! i'd appt with dr doo on wed but they called me to postpone it till thurs..not impressed with dr doo's clinic so far. hmmm

thanks as always, cara the superwoman! always to the rescue. :)

Please don't be put off Dr. Doo's clinic because of your rescheduled apt. kissy.missy. More than likely he has a birth to attend... If you were in labour and needed his services, you would also take priority over his clinic appointments. Good luck for Thursday!

thanks, flowertot!..sorry, i'm just grumpy..i think it is the hormones..ha ha..getting annoyed with little things..well, there was another incident last week which i'd mentioned in my earlier post:

"...i rushed to dr doo on thurs coz the receptionist said i can do the blood test before the first antenal checkup but when i got there, the receptionist who picked up my call was at lunch and the other receptionist told me that she didn't know why i'm there even though i told her two times that the receptionist on the phone had told me to come in that day to get the blood test done. well, she told me to come back on the booked date (wed). it was a bit of a time-waste as i rushed to get there before 1pm and then......"

so now it's like three strikes and i'm off to another OB/GYN. >.<
