It's still 6 months away but I've been reading up on delivery just to get mentally prepared...but one thing I can't figure out is why you have to remove all finger and toenail polish in advance? No big deal of course...just curious! Anyone know the rationale?

Never knew that. In fact I had a pedicure just before my due date on no. 2 because I was busy painting my toenails while in labour on no. 1 (no mean feat). For some reason I was in dread of being in labour with chipped nail varnish (which is weird because my nails are NEVER perfect). Nobody asked me to remove it, thankfully.

I made sure I had a pedicure, manicure, facial, eyebrow shape, etc... all right before delivery - yeah! It was the last chance for a few weeks :)
A serious wax too, just in case I needed an emergency C-section... I didn't in the end.
I was finally going to lose the bump and see my feet again - I wanted them to look good!! Will do the same this time.

It's in case you need a general anaesthetic - nail colour is one way to tell if things aren't going well whilst you're under!

We kept nail polish remover in our emergency caesar kit in the hospital I worked in back in Oz!
I remember my ob with my second child commenting on the lovely shade of varnish I had chosen for the birth!!!(He was an interesting chap - lol)

Yes, I think your toes turn slightly blue if there is a problem.

Have the pedicure, if you need GA, someone will take off the polish :)

W&H, it is only as a precaution. if, ( touch wood!) you had some complications and needed to be put on GA for an emergency caecarean, they will need to monitor your oxygen saturation to make sure that you and your baby are not deprived of oxygen. when under GA, a finger probe will be put on your finger so that oxygen saturation can be detected from your nail bed. if you have nail polish on, that will prevent them from getting an accurate reading. that is why they discourage nail polish. but like what the others have said, they always have polish remover on standby so it shouldn't be a problem. it's just more time consuming for them to remove your nail polish in the midst of emergency, that's all. but hopefully, you dont have to go through that.

Hiya,
I really wouldn't bother with any varnish on your pre-baby pedicure / manicure because they will come round with the varnish remover and ask you to take it off! I had a c-section (due to breech) at the Adventist. It wasn't an emergency as LO had been breech since wk 22.
And yes, it is so they can check you're ok and that your nails haven't gone blue through lack of oxygen or anything.
From what I remember, also had to take all my jewellery off including earrings. Frankly, the last thing you're going to care about after childbirth is your nail varnish - that's for sure!
