Does anyone have any information regarding adoption in China? I'm looking at both options, Hong Kong and China, but I'm not sure where to begin the process for adoption in China. All agencies seems to be US-based. If anyone has any info it would be greatefully appreciated.

Correct, the authorities in China work with approved agencies in the adopting families country. This is the prefered route. Strangly it is more complicated to adopt directly inside China than to go through the approved channels.
The system is veru efficient and surprisingly free of corruption. Most couples find it takes about a year, from first applicationn to baby pick-up.Last time I askeda couple they said it had cost about $15-18K but that included two trips to China.

Thanks Dr Moreton. So is it impossible to adopt from China whilst living in Hong Kong? I'm NZ and my husband is Australian and we have been here for 6 years. I've looked at adoption from China through the Australian channels, but the adopting family needs to live in Australia. Any more clues?

No not impossible but not as smooth.
Write to me at drmjmoreton@yahoo.com and I'll give you a contact name . I have to check that they would be happy me giving the name.

Denise,
you can contact social services here in HK. We adopted our daughter from China, but began the process in the USA, and social services helped us with out final paperwork. They might have some good info for you. Good luck!

Hi
Wonder if anyone has any good tips for an inter-country adoption (European child, Brit expat living in HK)..is there any agency in HK that can help - all agencies I seem to come across on the net are for US citizens.Help!!

It is actually not that difficult to adopt in HK. Contact International Social Services in Hong Kong www.isshk.org
They are very nice and helpful. And they cover more then China, but other countries as well. There is no issue with being an expat and living in HK. There are certain rules with each country you might consider to adopt from, but they will go through them with you. If you are American and want to adopt from China there are special considerations and extra costs as you must go through a US adoption agency as well in conjunction with ISS.

Would love if anyone has any information regarding xpats adopting in Shanghai. I am a US citizen and my husband is Irish, we have not lived in the US, but I am aware from researching what I can that we can adopt via an American Adoption Agency. Has anybody done this and can you recommend an agency?
